_**Prior to release 12.0.0, pets were aesthetic only (had no abilities) and could only be obtained by gold purchase. For information about pets as they existed before functional abilities were implemented for pets, please refer to the [Pets Prior to Release 12.0.0 page](/wiki/pets-prior-to-release-12-0-0)**_ Pets are allies which follow the player throughout the realm. They have no HP and do not absorb enemy projectiles, but they have abilities which benefit the player in battle, such as healing the player or attacking enemies. There are many families of pets which each contain their own species, and each pet has three abilities with which to aid their heroes in battle! Pets are hatched in the pet yard from eggs which can be found in the realms or obtained via purchase in the nexus/bazaar. There are five rarity levels of pets: Common, Uncommon, Rare, Legendary and Divine. Eggs can be found in all level rarities except divine. Each pet also has three abilities which are unlocked depending on the rarity of the pet. The levels of these abilities (and rarities) can be increased by the player through feeding and fusing the pets in the pet yard. Eggs are hatched in the pet yard, which holds up to 50 pets. In order for a pet to join you in battle, the pet must be hatched and then commanded to follow you in the pet yard. Pets are only removed from the yard upon being Released or Fused - they do not leave when you die. The Pet Yard is also the place to upgrade your pets by feeding them items or fusing them together. Both of these functions cost fame or gold at an increasing price dependent upon the pet's rarity level. In addition, the pet yard itself must be upgraded to sustain feeding and fusing at higher rarity levels. The costs can be found on the [Pet Yard](/wiki/pet-yard) page. **Pet Yard Level**:The rarity level of the pet yard determines the maximum rarity of pet that can be fed or fused. It is possible to hatch an egg one rarity level higher than the pet yard, but it is not possible to produce a pet with higher level rarity than the pet yard by fusing. You must upgrade your pet yard to the Rare level in order to fuse two Uncommons into a Rare pet, for example. **Feeding:** Items may be fed to pets in the pet yard to increase the levels of their abilities. All items have a "feed power" value, which is displayed in the item description. The amount of feed power required to increase the level of an ability varies depending on the current level of the ability (see [Pet Abilities](/wiki/pet-abilities)). Feed power generally increases with the tier of the item, and many untiered items have more feed power than their tiered counterparts. Special food items ([Pet Food](/wiki/pet-food)) can also be purchased with gold in the Nexus, which exist only to feed to pets and cannot be found in the realm. It is advisable to use higher feed power items when possible in order to limit the expenditure on pet feedings, since it costs fame or gold to perform each feeding and the cost per feeding increases with the rarity of the pet. **Fusing:** Two pets of the same family and rarity may be "fused", or joined together to create one new pet of the next rarity. When two pets have been fused, those pets will disappear from the pet yard and the new pet will appear for the first time in the pet yard (as though it had been hatched) and any character which either of the two lower level pets were following will now be followed by the resulting pet. The appearance of the new pet will be randomly selected from the next rarity within the family. However, the abilities (and levels of those abilities) of the new pet are determined by the abilities (and levels) of the lower rarity pets being fused. **It is best to max the abilities of the lower rarity pets prior to fusing in order to have the most powerful resulting pet**. It is also more cost effective to level up at the lower rarity levels prior to fusing because the cost per feeding to feed the pet is higher with each increase in rarity. All pets belong to a given family, and only pets of the same family can be fused together. The family and rarity of a hatched pet is determined by the egg from which the pet was hatched (e.g. a "common woodland egg" will hatch a randomly selected common rarity pet within the woodland family). Mystery eggs hatch a randomly selected pet of the given rarity from a randomly selected family. The primary influence family upon a pet is the appearance of the pet. However, the first ability of any hatched pet is predetermined by the individual species within the family. Thus, some families will not have any species which can hatch with a given first ability. For example, Automatons always have "electric" as first ability and humans always have "heal" as first ability. Other families have multiple species of common pets with differing first abilities. Uncommon pets identical to their Common counterparts and Legendary pets are larger versions of their Rare counterparts. Divine pets are the only level that cannot be hatched directly from eggs. There are 14 families: Aquatic, Automaton, Avian, Canine, Exotic, Farm, Feline, Humanoid, Insect, Penguin, Reptile, Spooky, Woodland, and ????. ##Pet Abilities _**Main Article: [Pet Abilities](/wiki/pet-abilities)**_
Each pet has three abilities. These abilities determine how the pet behaves and what function it provides when it is following the player. The possible abilities are Heal, Magic Heal, Electric, Attack Far, Attack Mid, Attack Close, Savage, Decoy, and Rising Fury. The first ability in a hatched pet is predetermined by the species of the pet (see [Pet Families](/wiki/pet-families)); the second and third abilities are selected at random from all other abilities. Pets hatched at higher level rarities than common will have a first ability selected at random from the first abilities available at the common level of the family. Fused pets inherit their abilities from the lower level rarity pets being fused. Each ability for a given pet levels up as the pet is fed (see [Pet Feeding](/wiki/pet-feeding)). Higher levels can mean increased frequency of ability use, increased effectiveness, or increased likelihood of ability success. **NOTE:** The level of a pets rarity is NOT the same as the level of its abilities. Each ability has its own level, which determines how that specific ability will function on that specific pet. Although pets always have three abilities, the second and third ability are unlocked at the Uncommon and Legendary level of rarity, respectively. The ability will not be used and cannot be leveled up until the pet reaches the necessary level of rarity. However, it is still important to level up the first ability to its stat cap prior to fusing for maximum effect of all abilities (see [Pet Fusing](/wiki/pet-fusing)).
