On another note, HOW DOES THIS COLOURING WORK? I try to colour a word and it just randomly changes colours, depending on random letters or numbers.

Hi Iā€™m McGlocklin, im in Nobodies Guild founded by Hetoupz. I am just happy to see a place where all of these changes can be explained more easily. People say that RoTMG is dying, but i dont personally believe that.

To color your text you can use this tool in the toolbar:

Which will do this: [color=#]my colored text[/color]

Unfortunately it doesnā€™t give you a color picker, so youā€™ll have to supply the RGB hex value yourself. A site like http://www.colorpicker.com/ is a good place. Find a color you like then copy the 6-digit code into your comment.

So, if I wanted blue I would use 0000FF. My code would look like [color=#0000FF]my colored text[/color] and my resulting text would look like this.

I see. I did use that, as shown in the ā€˜wassupā€™, and I kinda assumed it was something like that for picking it, but I wasnā€™t sure because of how it worked. Like I was wondering if it was words, and if I put ā€˜oranā€™ it made it green, putting ā€˜greenā€™ actually made it bright green, putting like 999123123 made it dark red, strange manā€¦

Oh, derp. Yeah, you clearly used it.

The browser is taking whatever you put as a color and trying to render it. If you donā€™t use a standard naming convention sometimes things get wonky.

In addition to RGB, it does also take X-11 named colors (which is where our in-game dye color names come from, actually). So, [color=Tomato]tomato color[/color] becomes tomato color

Changing the code behind the forum is admin-only stuff. That said, weā€™ve made all kinds of changes and forwarded it on to the admins to implement. We could add a color picker at some point if one of us decides to take the time to build one, or if RealmEye wants to do it themselves. Make a new thread in the Forum Feedback category so everyone will see it.

Learning hexadecimal is useful and how hex color values work is a useful skill though. The six-digit value that Doc provided an example of earlier is not so much a six-digit value as it is a set of three two-digit values. The first pair of digits is your red value, the second pair is your green value, and the third pair is your blue value. This means that FF0000 is red, 00FF00 is green, and 0000FF is blue. Then you just mix the varying amounts by changing the pairs of numbers.

Then all you have to learn is the hexadecimal numeric system, which is easier than it sounds. It just goes (starting from zero) 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, A, B, C, D, E, F, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and so on.

Itā€™s worth noting that each two digit set goes from 00 which is 0 in base10 to FF which is 255 in base10. This is why CSS also uses rgb(255, 255, 255). See also 24 bit True Color.
