How & Why to find an Abyss of Demons

How

You can find an Abyss of Demons in the godlands, and only a White Demon or Lucky White Demon (which is much rarer) can drop this dungeon, so just kill White Demons until one of them drops an Abyss. The drop chance is high, so you should have no difficulty finding one.

Why

The Demon Blade (DBlade) is a great DPS sword, shooting two rapid shots. However, they require you to get close to an enemy to deal the damge. Fortunately, most melee classes have the DEF to tank the shots from enemies close up.

The Volcanic Sheath is a sidegrade sheath, great for crowd clearing. Its damage can be amplified as it has WisMod, meaning wearing the Volcanic Sheath in conjunction with WIS boosting gear can be very beneficial.

The boss has a rare chance of dropping a couple of pet skins, both of which look very nice.

In addition, two pieces of the Magmatic Mystic Set have a chance to drop here; the orb from Malphas, and the robe from the Abyss Idol. Also, Malphas has a chance of dropping the Rocky Robe, the armor piece for the Earthen Bulwark Summoner Set.

The Abyss of Demons is one of the few sources of Potions of Vitality. Also, the boss has a chance of dropping a Potion of Defense, while the treasure room has a guaranteed Defense and Vitality drop. Finally, the White Demons of the Abyss have a chance of dropping Potions of Attack.

Class Tips

Any class can get through this dungeon unmaxed in about 10 minutes, maybe longer if the pet is bad. However, some classes can get to the boss much faster, and other classes can’t handle the boss when they get there without a decent pet.

Paladin/Warrior

Buffing sword classes make running an Abyss easier, as they can buff themselves and their allies, sword strikes can deal great damage to rushing enemies, and their decent tanking ability provides more of a shield against Brute attacks. Buffing yourself and shooting around corners will save you a lot of trouble. With patience and not a small amount of luck, these classes can solo the dungeon, even when they are fresh 0/8. Their assistance abilities (healing and speed) can be used to cross lava rivers.

A Warrior with a Helm of the Juggernaut’s Wooden Shield Armored buff can literally waltz through the Abyss, tanking shots that would normal kill even a Knight. Just make sure you don’t run out of the buff halfway through a cluster of the Abyss Brutes.

A Paladin with the Sword Damaging buff can deal around 400 damage and kill the Brutes and Demons in just a couple of hits.

The Ancient Stone Sword works well as all the minions can be 1-shotted, but because of the high ATT/damaging, top tiered swords will have a decent chance of 1 shotting on their own especially on Paladin and ATT boosting gear (such as the Ring of the Pyramid) only improves it.

Priest

A Priest is a safe class to run an Abyss of Demons with because it can heal itself/allies, hit the boss from afar, and kill the White Demons of the Abyss in the boss room with ease. The pierce of most wands will let you kill the demons quickly. With a Tome of Holy Protection and a good Magic Heal Pet, you can be Wooden Shield Armored most of the time and have an easy time rushing.

Bow Classes

Bow classes with moderate-level or higher equipment can clear the minions quite well, as bows pierce through multiple demons and Traps and Quivers can stop Brute charges in their tracks. Their abilities also make scoring hits on the boss easier due to their movement-inhibiting effects.

A Huntress should carry a Hunting Trap to place before the entrance of each room. Dragging enemies out of the room will cause them to be Red Down Arrow Slowed, allowing for you to back away and shoot from a safe distance.

Assassin

The Assassin is a great class for this dungeon. Its extremely high speed means it will be able to escape chasing enemies very easily, and while all dagger classes have the aforementioned property, the Assassin separates itself by being one of two classes with an AoE damaging ability. While it does put itself in more danger than the Huntress with lobbing its Poisons, the damage dealt is ideal for the enemies’ low health stats, and if landed correctly, clusters of demons will be melted within seconds, allowing the Assassin to proceed safely.

Sorcerer

The Sorcerer can hit the boss from a distance, kill the white demons in the boss room with ease, and hurt multiple demon minions at once without aiming if you spam your Scepter. The Fulmination Scepter’s Slow really helps and makes you one of the faster clearers. Again, piercing wands allow for you to clear multiple demons easily.

Knight

Due to their high defense, it is the only class that has a chance against the treasure room boss unmaxed without using HP potions, it can kill the main boss easily, and it can fight decently against the abyss demons. Never go into a new room without at least one Stun ready for tight situations. With maxed Defense and a decent heal pet he can rush decently.

It is ideal to use an Ancient Stone Sword, as all the minions can be 1-shotted especially if you have ATT gear like the Pyramid Ring.

Necromancer

With care, a Necromancer can run an Abyss, maxed or not, solo. Last-second heals can save you/teammates, and being a staff class allows safe snipping to some point. Be mindful, however, of Brutes, as they can shred even through a 6/8 Necro if they catch you off-guard.

Ninja

The Ninja may not the tankiest, but especially with a Doku and max Defense you can just poke around a corner, shred the minions with your piercing, spam Stars at the regular demons before they can shoot a wave of those big red shots and move on. The boss’s HP will dwindle fast because of the Ninja’s high DPS.

Layout and Navigation

Layout:

Abyss Layout

The Abyss is essentially a lot of interconnected rooms. When entering the dungeon, first look to see how many different paths you have from the first starting room. If you have 2 or more paths make sure to try and clear the one that is away from the other paths, or whichever path has the fewest lava bridges. The Abyss does have dead ends, so be mindful when rushing. Every room contains mobs, and lava is always a source of panic if you get rushed by the minions.

Rushing this dungeon is extremely dangerous. Swarms of brutes can tear you to ribbons. This combined with the slowing and damage of the lava makes rushing the Abyss a perilous task only to be undertaken by the most experienced adventurers. Run into a dead end, and if you have a train following you’re probably screwed. Be mindful, and don’t underestimate the Abyss.

Once you have chosen a path try to clear out every room you see. If you enter a room that has 2 or more different paths to go on, be very careful, as you’ll be in for a fight. Many times you will be chased down by demon brutes, which are the fat melee demons without shields. They are fast and strong, but an easy way to dodge demon brutes is to circle them in more of a triangle pattern. This will often throw off their aim and cause them to shoot in the opposite direction.

When you need to walk through lava but you don’t see a bridge, there is probably one left or right of the last bridge piece you saw, as they can be hidden by the walls towering over them. Using camera rotation is a must.

If you come across a room with a Hallway, DO NOT ENTER; not until either you have killed Archdemon Malphas, or until you and/or your group are completely filled up with hp and mp, as this is the treasure room, a much harder boss that must be killed quickly. Treasure rooms are uncommon, so you’re less likely to find one.

Once you have fought your way to the lair of Archdemon Malphas, make sure to start out by circling the boss room, killing all the White Demons you see. Then, once you have killed the White Demons, make sure there are no unexplored side rooms around the boss that could have extra Abyss demons in them. Remember, better safe than sorry. Once you have cleared out all the White Demons and extra abyss demons, you are ready for the boss.

Boss

Archdemon Malphas

Archdemon Malphas

Fighting this boss is an incredibly easy task in comparison to getting to him. When you start the boss fight, he will spawn minions that circle him at a great distance. They are just there to shoot at people who are trying to snipe him - if you’re in his face you don’t have to worry about his minions.

Phase 1

Malphas will alternate between two attacks:
- Chasing nearby players and shooting a three wide spread of armor piercing shots, while invincible Malphas Missiles will charge at players before exploding
- Firing various single purple blasts while also firing 3 shockwave shots that Expose.
For the first one, simply drag Malphas around the arena. For the his second attack, keep your distance and especially dodge the Expose shots, as they leave you more vulnerable.

Phase 2

Malphas will grow and begin circling the arena counter clockwise on the outer edge, alternating once again between two attacks:
- Shooting a low but powerful 3 armed spiral of single blasts
- Firing a shotgun of multiple Expose wave shots
For both phases, rotate with Malphas in order to continously deal damage. His 3 armed spiral attack is very predictable to dodge, so simply rotate. His Expose shotgun however is more difficult. You must either fake him out similarly with an Ent God, moving in one direction then quickly moving in the opposite, or weave in between the gaps of the shotgun, although the latter is much more difficult.

Phase 3

Malphas grows even larger and summons Malphas Hounds, while resummoning them throughout the phase. He will end with two alternating attacks:
- Chasing players while shooting armor piercing shotguns in 3 directions
- Remaining stationary while shooting both two-directional armor piercing shotguns and the occasional armor breaking ring of shots
The Malphas Hounds may make this phase more dangerous. However, if you quickly dispatch of them before dealing damage, you may be able to skip any of them being respawned. For his chase attack, drag him around the arena again, similar to phase 1. As for his stationary attack, move in the gaps of the armor breaking rings of shots, especially if the Malphas Hounds respawn, as they will then deal much more damage then before. Also rotate around the boss while he’s doing his 2-directional shotguns, as they’re slow and easy to predict.

Treasure Room Boss

Abyss Idol

Abyss Idol

Treasure rooms are recognizable by their long hallways with 4 red pillars. At the end of the hall is a small treasure room with a stationary boss in the center, the Abyss Idol. Clear out all of the minions in the room before shooting the boss, as they make the fight much harder if they’re still alive when the boss is active. When activated, the boss will immediately start firing a ring of 6 projectiles that do 65 damage each, but only have 1.2 range (In other words, don’t sit on the Idol). Afterwards, the Abyss Idol will shoot out a shotgun of small bullets at players and 4 large bullets around itself. These large bullets inflict Paralyzed Icon Paralyzed, so dodge them at all costs. With maxed defense, the smaller shotguns are of notably lesser concern. The boss will also flood parts of the room with lava. You can watch where the yellow bombs land to avoid standing where the lava is about to flood. Your best bet is to use your ability early and often; use any and all abilities you have as soon as he is vulnerable. Just know you only get one chance to kill him, as the only way out is blocked up by lava. Make sure you are ready for the worst, and be ready to nexus or have someone ready to teleport to if you get in trouble.

Important Note
If the Hallway doesn’t clear up of lava after the Abyss Idol is defeated, it means that there are multiple Treasure Rooms, and that they all must be defeated in order to clear up all Hallways. However, this also means you must walk through the lava out of the Treasure Room. Make use of healing abilities, pets, or HP potions if needed.

Summary

Only rush if you are very experienced and always expect the worst. If you’ve never done one before, stick in a group. The boss is easier than the dungeon, but watch out for that treasure room!

This is a very efficient source of pots given the common drop rate of the portal and the fact that you can potentially get both DEF and VIT, with the possibility of treasure rooms making running the dungeon potentially more lucrative.

A Rogue (unmaxed is doable but hard and sketchy) with a maxed rare pet with MP heal can rush these in a couple minutes or less and can handle Malphas. It is a very good source of pots worth quite a bit and can easily earn a Potion of Life every hour, maybe even 3 Life per hour if you’re fast.
