The Accursed variant behaves more aggressively, but otherwise acts the same. When killed, it will turn into a cursed grave that will resurrect it after a period of time.

While the mage is using his barrage attack, it is safe to approach and damage him. Always try to position yourself between his shots, as his firing pattern never changes and he will be completely unable to damage you.
If the mage uses his bomb attack, as indicated by a brief glow, back away, and wait for the bombs to explode. The bombs themselves cannot be damaged, and will inflict incredibly high damage to nearby players. NEVER allow yourself to be caught in the center of the bomb cluster, or walk over an exploding bomb - this will instantly kill any non-melee classes.
Before Exalt Version 2.0.2.0 (Aug 2021), the Archmage of Flame behaved differently, had different attacks, no drops, no accursed variant, and the following sprite:
