How does the estimated read time work?

I’m very curious, I’m guessing it’s based off of words, but what value(if you guys can say) does it use for average words read/minute?

What algorithim does the forum use to determine the read time at the top of the post?

It’s based on average time spent actively reading the thread with a catch for idle time so you don’t have wildly distorted averages.

This time is also used in your user preferences to automatically track threads after actively reading them for a certain time.

Edit: One example is this thread currently with 94 replies and a read time of 0 minutes due to people jumping in, posting a word and leaving.
