Feedback on my recent testing.
What I Like
- The hp / def of the enemies here is at a level that seems pretty fair. Not too many dps sponges for the sake of being tanky or the like.
- Enemy shot patterns are fair and can be engaging. Each unit alone has a relatively simple to dodge pattern but in a larger group, there can be some fun maneuvering.
- Damage output of the minions isn’t so high to feel demoralizing to players without a pet. With a maxed character, you can pretty reliably make it to O3 if you are a good dodger or have a nice group with you.
- Players are encouraged to keep moving / not sit still in a group.
- The gates that prevent too much rushing are nice addition.
- The minibosses before oryx have some interesting fights while not being prohibitively hard. So far, they seem like a good warm-up for the ultimate battle.
Things I almost Like / Things in need of tweaking
- The teleporting minions could stand to be more visible. With a larger group they can get covered up and catch you unawares, instantly popping you. While I don’t mind their damage output, they shouldn’t be a surprise.
- In large groups, things can be cluttered. With the bullet-hell features of the minibosses and O3 himself, the shots could stand to be clearer. Whether this means a toggle-able setting that shows shots over players, a player visibility toggle, a function where player opacity changes with amount of players, etc. remains to be implemented, but is necessary if the shots will be as damaging and as plentiful as they are here.
- You can’t really tell if minions are either immune to certain debuffs or if they don’t display the debuff over their head. I personally don’t like the trend of everything becoming immune to abilities in an attempt to raise difficulty. For bosses it’s one thing, but for minions it’s a bit weird. As a separate issue, the removal of stasis on bosses is something I dislike as stasis has functional uses apart from just being a ‘troll ability’ but that’s not super relevant here.
Things I Dislike
- O3 Difficulty: The rage / celestial phase seems too hard. It is an especially big jump in difficulty from the previous phases. For perspective, I can get to the rage phase without needing any pet even on squishy robe classes. Past that, I wasn’t able to reliably survive even with a max divine pet unless I cheesed it with oreo, for example. I think part of this issue comes from a lack of reliable spacing between the shots. One circle around and there will be a space to maneuver through the shotguns, but the next rotation may be a wall of shots that can’t really be dodged.
- O3 Callouts: Oryx is too talkative for my liking. His phase callouts are long snippets of text and some have grammatical issues or don’t make too much sense. I recommend looking back to how O1 speaks - each callout has a clear meaning and helps to anticipate the phase changes. Short and sweet, but still they have character to them. I wouldn’t get so caught up in using big words such that they occlude the meaning of the callout. Additionally, the 4 statues could perhaps have their text be reduced to when they are all down (they may be this way, I didn’t get a chance to really check).
Overall I found Oryx3 and the Sanctuary to be a reasonable upgrade from the wine cellar, with a few exceptions as noted above. I would like to see some more wine though - I understand the set design is still in progress.
What I liked
- Bard ability is a good addition to the game as long as there is a combat change akin to the in combat / ooc changes previously put forth. The ability could be a bit broken with current combat, but would be a great addition to the game with the combat changes. The bard seems fun to play, which is ultimately the most important aspect of a new character.
- Bard ST (?) set is pretty well balanced and it’s funny to be a sheep +1.
- The robe and bow combo works rather well.
Overall I don’t have too much to say on the bard as it seems balanced well enough. As long as some form of combat changes makes it to the game, the bard will be a strong addition to the game.
I may edit this post later on to add more thoughts.
