Are there any criteria for that? Because that would make a sense as to the sudden spike, or do the mods just pick them when they want to?

There is, sort of, but it’s a hard-to-pin-down “we’ll know it when we see it”. Basically, these guys are contributing to the forums in a way that we like to see people contribute to the forums, and they’ve shown that they can be trusted with a bit more responsibility than the regular Regulars, so this is one way to show that we appreciate their contributions and that we’d like them to keep up the good work.
[And if I can get one of them to mop and polish the floor once in a while, maybe I can get myself a day off… OB]
