Sounds like the exact reason why flags are vetted by mods.

Yeah, the rules are a bit weird with profanity, since forbidding it completely would mean nearly everyone would be permabanned.

I think the main distinction to be made is between posts that have some profanity in them while still being relevant to the discussion and posts that exist purely to insult other people. There’s also probably a grading scale between relatively benign words like “shit” and insults that are much nastier or likely flame-bait (typically, racial slurs for example).

Granted, I don’t flag all that often because I’m not 100% sure of how it works (and also because it would be really hypocritical of me in some cases).
