The Ranger, a Close-Quarters Bow Class

#41

skimmed it, basically seemed like a pure dps class like warrior, except from a longer range.

#42

Yet it has less DPS than Archer and Huntress when you are not factoring in the abilityā€¦
Besides, its role is a damage dealer, not crowd control or tanking. If you were expecting a class with complex behavior Iā€™m sorry, this wonā€™t be that. My older class designs could be considered complex, that may interest you perhaps, though I care little for them now.
(I personally do not believe that 6 additional def is enough to give a class the ā€œtankā€ role, especially since his VIT and HP are not suitable for that.)

Iā€™ve made another set of bracer sprites.
Iron

Skydust

Elven

Magesteel

Golden

Windstriker

Cyclone

Which do you prefer?
Old sprites or new sprites?

  • Old Sprites

  • New Sprites

Let me know if and how I should improve these sprites!

Iā€™ll swap or keep the sprites when about ten people have voted on it. (Unless 6 people prefer one over the other before then.)

#43

I think the main thing here is that the old sprite look like quivers without the arrows sticking out.

#44

Hey, I can see it being braces way more now. I can definitely say that your sprites department has improved :confetti_ball:

#45

The best I could do is rotate them to another angle at this point. I was told that the first three tiers should have a secondary color anyway, which I completely agree with.

Iā€™m also not sure which set of sprites I like better anyway, mainly why Iā€™m having the community decide.

@BaraBlazer Thanks! I still donā€™t know how I feel about those new sprites though.
(And I think Iā€™d have to disagree with my ā€œsprite departmentā€ improving. Iā€™m not being modest, its just that I personally feel as though Iā€™ve made much better sprites in the past.)

#46

Is the Ranger going to have a big iron on his hip?
(Fallout refrence)
Also I like the abilities being green, green is a great color for stuff to be

#47

Took me a moment to understand the reference, havenā€™t played that game in so long, lol.

The green was really only a coincidence, but Iā€™m glad somebody likes it. c:
(The ST set Iā€™m working on for the class might be too green tbhā€¦ I dunno, weā€™ll see.)

#48

huh, t6 reminds me of somethingā€¦(cough, shield, cough)

#49

Yeah. I think jawsjakt also has mentioned that it was inspired by t6 shieldā€™s colors

#50

Alrighty, Iā€™ve replaced the bracer sprites with the newer ones. I personally really donā€™t like either of the sprite sets. Still taking suggestions on how to improve them.

@HerpDerryO Iā€™ll probably recolor the T6 bracer to a reddish tint instead of green. Causeā€™ now that I think about it, it does seem silly that I am basing it off of another T6 ability when no other abilities do that.
On that note, I also may want to change the T1 or the T3ā€™s sprite to be a different color. Three shades of grey do seem like a bit much for an ability. Once again, any suggestions on how to make these changes are greatly appreciated.

(Iā€™d like to get the community involved as best as I can without making yā€™all do any work for me!)

#51

Iā€™ve added a UT ability under the UT tab despite saying I would not. Iā€™ve changed my mind and will be adding more regularly.

Let me know what you think of the ability. You can find out about how it came to be in this link.

#52

Iā€™ve recolored three sprites, the Skydust, Magesteel, and Cyclone to a tinge of blue, purple, and red respectively.

Let me know if they look better this way to you.

(Oh, and Iā€™ve added a drop-down for the edit log so it doesnā€™t take up a fifth of the post now!)

#53

Definitely looking better. Love what you did to the t6. Red is a pretty aggressive color, after all.

#54

Iā€™m thinking of widening the gap between the Ranger and the Archer/Huntress classes.

  • Change the stats to the following:
    Lower ATT, 65 -> 60
    Raise SPD, 50 -> 55
  • Leave the stats alone.

Thoughts?

I think it is a positive change because getting closer can get the Ranger into sticky situations, something a bit of extra speed can help with.

#55

I think you can buff the spd just fineā€¦ The warr and wizzy already has top DpS of its weapon class w/o ability. This classā€™ DPS is actually behind without the skillā€¦

Edit; screw it, Iā€™m gonna say it. Take this with a grain of salt;

Iā€™d say kick the att and dex up to 75, just like the wizzy and warr, or maybe buff the bracer backā€¦ If this is supposed to be the DPS class, it should be able to compete with the other DPS classes. Iā€™ll see if I can plug stats into pfiffel soon.

#56

As much as I wanted the Ranger to have high stats from the beginning I knew it would be better to roll with lower stats. Then I was perplexed to find that people wanted the DPS even lower.
Either people donā€™t realize how little DPS matters in RotMG now and how incredibly useful slow/paralyze is or they simply donā€™t care and donā€™t want to take any chances in having another ā€œwarriorā€.

I guess ya gotta keep in mind that even though 6 DEF isnā€™t enough to actually make the difference needed, people prefer it low, just personal preference probably as the class is a ranged class, so I understand. (Then there is the Prot Priest and ranged healers in general, but that is a different story I suppose.)

Another thing to note is that the existing DPS classes do not have weapons that normally pierce enemies, so a long ranged Ninja with DPS that rivals a wizard and warrior probably isnā€™t exactly good for the game.

Another reason why I am okay with having the stats low is because they can always be buffed; I have never seen a stat get nerfed, which is something Iā€™m sure the community wonā€™t exactly be happy about for a few obvious reasons.

I appreciate your suggestion, but the most Iā€™d be willing to do without more peopleā€™s input is to raise the abilityā€™s damage back. (Even then Iā€™d put up a poll just to be safe.)

EDIT: Oh, and at this point I am just making sure the class is functionable. As I said, DPS doesnā€™t matter nearly as much as it had since DECA lowered SB thresholds, gave more guaranteed loot, etc. Iā€™m okay with taking a dip in DPS to ensure that the class plays the way it should.

#57

I can think of one example: paladinā€™s max DEX was lowered from 50 to 45 in this update.

About DPS, a few graphs comparing the DPS of the ranger with the archerā€™s and huntressā€™ wouldnā€™t hurt.

#58

Do you happen to know anyone that played during that period that could elaborate on both what the community reaction was and developerā€™s explanation?

This wonā€™t affect the class, Iā€™m just curious.

Now that the offensive stats have changed several times I guess it wouldnā€™t hurt to supply some visual guide. My only concern is that I will not be able to accurately pinpoint the damage output of his ability; I supplemented it with the Wizardā€™s spell before, but that isnā€™t accurate for a number of reasons.

#59

ā€¦but we have a Ranger Skin!

#60

Iā€™m aware, that is why I have adressed that issue here.

A class concept should not be omitted because of the name of a skin. If DECA can reskin existing sprites they can certainly rename existing sprites.
