The Ronin: a drunkard Katana/Robe class with new ability sake

#1

The Ronin a new class that uses a katana and robe
Unlocked by reaching Level 20 on Samurai.

Unable to protect his master who was assassinated and find a noble death among his fellow samurais. This masterless warrior, now in self imposed exile for his failure and dropping his samurai way, wanders the realm aimlessly with his trusty sake bottle that drowns away his sorrow.

The Ronin would be the 18th class in the game that is unlocked by reaching Level 20 on Samurai. The class uses katanas, robes, rings, and his unique sake ability. The sake ability allows the ronin to negate or even avoid damage, increase speed, and attack, increasing his damage output.

To withstand and triumph against the toughest of foes, the ronin relies on zen to come out on top. He achieves this state by taking a whisk from his sake bottle. This skill was attained through years of experience battling under the influence of sake. Now, instead of getting drunk from his drink the ronin reaches zen as he has mastered the technique of drunken fighting.

Zen is a new buff that converts 50% of damage taken as a damage over time effect and has a percent chance to evade the damage all together. The chance to avoid damage is affected by wis mod. Additionally, the ronin gains increased speed and attack during the abilities duration.

NGL, the only thing that bothers me is the Vit cap. Since Ronin is considered as a melee, he should have 60 Vit cap to be on par with his fellow Katana classes.

I don’t like Evasion. The idea of randomly dodging shots makes combat basically a lottery. In some ways it’s better than a 0.5 chance, as with 0.5 half the shots miss you until they don’t and you eat a shotgun and die. But with chances like 0.03, 0.05 you’d have to basically treat it as if it wasn’t there, and the odd shot that misses every few seconds counts as a bonus. Except when you’re quited/silenced and can’t use it. I.e. it’s a poor replacement for the def you’re missing compared to other katana classes.

Apart from that seems quite underpowered, compared to other classes. +3/+3 SPD/ATK on a t5 is worse e.g. than the bonuses from a cloak or quiver, especially as those bonuses are always on. Or compare it to a tiered Helm which gives Speedy (+50%) and Berserk (+25% ), sort of a +30/+15 SPD/DEX, with the Berserk also a group buff.

Two Ronin class ideas within 2 days of each other

Anyway, I agree with Skandling on this one. I’d rather see a class that has manual dodging capabilities over rng methods, but even that would pose some questions in my mind.
