History

On November 11th, 2011 (Build 119), an irritated player named Cronus posted an expletive-filled thread on the old WildShadow Forums. In his rant, he furiously complained about his trading misfortunes. New players constantly offered him relatively worthless items, namely dirks, for more expensive ones.

Matt (Itani), Guolin, and several others responded in jest, stating that such deals were of great value. Others scorned Cronus for underestimating the true value of dirks. Even DOKTORPUSZ mentioned his deep and lasting regret for turning down a trade for a dirk.

As the thread gained popularity, a Developer (Chedd) suddenly stated:

Although he mentioned it jokingly, the player population took it and ran, making dozens of forum posts and intra-thread trades. Some even went as far as trying to sell dirks for Wine Cellar tops. At the peak of this “dirk frenzy,” 8 dirks became the in-game equivalent of 1 Defense Potion, making them highly sought after.

Furthermore, Chedd had to address the issue publicly in this thread, where he stated:

As funny as it has been to watch the increasing fervor and rampant speculation about dirk rarity in these forums, I’m becoming worried that some poor soul might actually get tricked into trading away things of great value in exchange for a dirk, so let me officially put a stop to the silliness: no, dirks are not becoming ultra-rare or ultra-valuable.

The root of this rumor seems to be this thread, where many of players were joking around. Rest assured, it truly was just a joke.

Chedd then posted that he also got inspiration to make an overpowered dagger named after Cronus as an “apology” for adding to his complaints.

The initial Testing description of the Dirk of Cronus read: This legendary dagger was commissioned by the Realm denizens known as ASDF, BMJ, and REALNAPALM.

It is also important to note that other “Dirk Crazes” started with players back in Build 105 (or perhaps earlier) quickly swapping Dirks into public loot bags dropped by events. They would then say that the Cube God (or other event boss) actually dropped the Dirk.

2018 History:
Due to the Etherite dagger being “stronger” than Cdirk despite Cdirk being a white bag, “buff cdirk” has become a meme on the rotmg subreddit. A subredditor named GoldennHD_ made “buff cdirk” posts for 115 straight days, eventually being made to stop by the mods (post: link). In response to this, around the beginning of February, the subreddit exploded with “buff cdirk” memes, almost to the point to spamming, according to the mods. Then, in response to conplaints about “buff cdirk” posts flooding the subreddit and decreasing post/meme diversity, the mods decided that “buff Cdirk” posts for be banned within 24 hrs of this post.

Notes

The Dirk of Cronus, while an extremely powerful dagger (weaker than the Etherite Dagger), has a very short range (but farther than the Etherite Dagger). It should not be used as an all-purpose dagger, as there are many situations where its small range will hinder its use greatly. The range from tiered daggers would benefit the player more. However, if the target can be approached safely, such as a cloaked Rogue, the use of the Dirk of Cronus is justified.

A lot of players use a much more powerful (and more readily available) alternative, the Etherite Dagger.
