Fame Train

A Fame Train is an organized group of players that will run around the border of the godlands, killing gods along the way, in order to get Fame efficiently and quickly.

Fame trains are almost nonexistent in current RotMG. Fame farmers instead run the Lost Halls (specifically, the Cultist Hideout) or other dungeons like Parasite Chambers and The Nest during 1.5x XP events. These can be boosted further with Dungeon Modifiers. See the history below for more details.

Fame Trains are/were usually disliked by the community. Many people on the leaderboards (ab)used them in order to get to the top rankings, while being significantly safer and historically faster than endgame dungeons, while disrupting the normal realm experience. There was also suspicion that some of the top players used “Ghost Realms” or the term “Boating” (creating inaccessible realms to gain a significant amount of fame in a short period of time.) in order to get into top leaderboards with little to no effort.

Common Guidelines and Courtesies

If you happen to stumble across a fame train in the Realm (or you’ve joined a server that is organizing a fame train), there are some common courtesies one can follow to help the train’s effectiveness and to avoid inconveniencing both other players and yourself.

  • Do not stasis enemies; as you would expect, Stasis prevents those enemies from being killed as the train passes by, lowering fame gains.

History

Until early 2013, most players used the roads of the realms in an effort to level up faster. These “EXP Road Trains” eventually gave way to fame trains in the godlands, and are now not really seen today.

Until 2018-05-30 Hotfix X.26.1.0, where pausing in Realm got disabled, Fame Trains had “Pausers” (Players that Pauses in the Realm for Fame Trains) around the Godlands. These were used to prevent Gods from spawning in the center of the Godlands in order to increase the spawn rate on the outer sides, where the Train would run into. These were incredibly effective, but it was found that most, if not all fame trains, used Bots/Alts that aren’t a real person as a “Pauser”. This was clearly against the ToS of the game, and DECA decided to disable pausing in Realm ever since.

From 2018-09-12 to 2020-05-02, many methods were used to replace “Pausers”. The most popular method was to use “Idlers” (Players that AFK in the Realm for Fame Train) around the Godlands. Idlers were usually setup on third-party software to enhance the survivability of the account while idling in the Godlands. In March of 2019, Idlers were optimized to be set up in specific areas in the godlands to create massive god walls (usually 100-500 gods). These trains surpassed legitimate fame gain and would average 40-50 FPM (Fame Per Minute) or thousands of fame in just a few hours. (For comparison, a normal train would average 8-12 FPM) Many top players abused this new method, new accounts reached white star within just a few hours, however, this will soon come to an abrupt end. On June 16th, Valsined (Deca Employee) entered the train secretly and watched as many top players exploited. Valsined immediately closed the realm and a public statement regarding Idling was made on Reddit.

After the crackdown on Idling, many players resorted to creating “Ghost Realms” using unofficial, third-party clients in order to have a consistent source of fame train. These Ghost Realms were completely inaccessible by any means to normal players, after a patch which made it so exiting a dungeon no longer put you in an empty realm if you timed it correctly, and only the people using the unofficial clients would be able to access it. This allowed idling to continue with a small group of players without a risk of being caught. However, DECA Games soon took notice and banned any exploiters as quickly as possible.

The fame redistribution featured in Exalt Version 1.2.0.0 (Oct 2020), as well as future fame changes, have largely killed off fame trains. Dungeons became much more lucrative, while the Lost Halls remained as XP-rich as ever. The extremely powerful items of Oryx’s Sanctuary only made them more efficent. Exalt Version 2.0.1.0 (Aug 2021) sealed their fate, since dungeon modifiers (for minion XP) dramatically increase fame/time.
