Kitsune Umi

Kitsune Umi is the secret boss of the Moonlight Village.

The Realm Eye says:
Kitsune Umi is the goddess of fire and revelry, the last of a long line of heavenly deities presiding over the Eastern lands long before the age of Oryx.
She is most well known for inventing the dance known as danmaku. Through her time as a master of the arts, she has taught a few lucky humans the coveted spiritual dance.
She is often seen hiding in plain sight as a regular villager and loves to trick and play with unsuspecting visitors to her little village.

Behavior

The battle with Kitsune Umi can only be initiated if the dancers have been defeated on any mode above Leisurely. After talking with Village Girl Umi at the shrine after the fight, she may provide an option to return to the square, upon which she will transform and begin to attack.
“Fireworks are usually lit at the end of festivals…”
“So let’s begin!”

Unlike the dancers, Umi will use three sets of Damage and Danmaku phases, for a total of 6; this also means she is guaranteed to use all three of her possible Danmaku phases. At the end of the 6 phases, she will use her own Last Word as well.

See the Boss Phases section of the main page for more info on her battle structure.

True Umi

“Your performance at the festival dance was breath taking! You weaved through the danmaku of my three students with ease.”
“Your mastery tonight reminds me of one of my former students.”
“…”

If only one player is in the dungeon, they have the completed story of The Night Prince, and they manage to clear the Moonlight Dance on Challenge Mode without collecting any flames (ie. without damaging the Dancers or following the Lantern), they will find Umi at the shrine and be able to initiate a more dangerous version of the fight, indicated by her greeting dialogue changing. When arriving back at the square, Umi will transform as usual, but will now be named Umi, Goddess of Revelry.

In her true form, Umi’s attacks are enhanced, she will have new dialogue, and she will gain a new final attack after her normal one. However, if defeated this way, Umi will drop a third loot bag that always contains a T14 Weapon, Concentrated Soul Fire, and a title unlocker for “the Night Prince”.

Attacks or content exclusive to Umi, Goddess of Revelry will be denoted by an Exclusive to Umi, Goddess of Revelry icon.

Damage Phases

During these phases, Umi will be Gold Four Pointed Star Armor Broken and must be damaged to accelerate the phase. In each one, Umi will use one standard attack at random, coupled with a random secondary attack to supplement it. She will never use the same attack more than once.

Exclusive to Umi, Goddess of Revelry All attacks will fire significantly faster, and deal higher damage.

Light Show

Umi traps players in a ring of fire and sets up a firework box that starts firing rings of flame swirls. Umi will rotate counterclockwise around it, shooting a stream of stars towards the box to form a spiral.

Fireworks Display

Umi seals off the corners of the arena and moves to the top, before launching flames telegraphed by warning symbols. The flames move in a straight line while firing short-ranged fire waves in front of themselves, and leave behind trails of stationary colored stars. After flying a certain distance, the flames will explode into a double ring of fireballs and fire waves.

Bright Flares

Umi seals off the top and bottom of the arena, then starts repeatedly dashing at players, with the direction of her dash being indicated by a warning arrow in advance. She will leave behind explosions of colored stars while dashing, and at the end of each dash, she will pause and release a nova of flame stars, telegraphed by smaller warning arrows.

Spirited Away

Umi summons two spirits that rotate around her, leaving behind a trail of stationary flame twirls and periodically firing colored stars in multiple directions. At the edges of the arena, two faster flames rotate in the opposite direction, doing the same thing. Umi herself will circle in the center of the arena, firing a short-ranged flurry of flame stars.

Playful Chase

Umi chases players while firing 3-way shotguns of fireballs. At the same time, streams of rainbow stars from the edges of the arena converge on the center of the arena, forming an oscillating trefoil pattern.

Secondary Attacks
  • Rings of turning rainbow bullets fired from outside the arena borders.
  • Bursts of fire waves periodically fired from the corners of the arena.
  • Flames that travel down the length of the arena, leaving behind stationary trails of fire stars. When reaching the edge of the arena, the flames explode into a short-ranged ring of rainbow shots.
  • Explosions of rainbow bullets periodically detonated around the arena borders.
  • Firework boxes at the corners of the arena which shoot spreads of fireballs.

Danmaku Phases

During these phases, players cannot harm Umi and must stay close to the Lantern in the arena to speed up the phase. Players will be inflicted with Pet Stasis Pet Stasis, Silenced Silenced, Skull Sick, Empty Potion Bottle Drought, and In Combat for the duration of the phase, but will also be given 3 seconds of Red Cross Healing and Blue Cross Energized at the end of it.

Exclusive to Umi, Goddess of Revelry All Danmaku Phases will also inflict Gold Five Pointed Star Stunned.

Procession of Lively Spirits

Umi seals off the left and right sides of the arena with walls of flame, leaving a single column in the middle. A rain of rainbow shots will start flying down the length of the column, and Umi will be “bouncing” around the arena, releasing an expanding ring of fire waves whenever she touches either the flame walls or the top/bottom of the arena.

The Lantern moves up and down along the vertical axis of the arena.

Exclusive to Umi, Goddess of Revelry The rainbow shots come from both the top and bottom of the arena and follow a new pattern resembling walls with gaps to dodge through.

Rage Against the Dying Light

Umi traps players in a ring of bullets and starts rotating counterclockwise around the arena. She fires 4-way pairs of fireballs and rings of flame waves, and periodically stops to release a massive nova of harmless flames that turn into lingering hazards once fully expanded. The spirits rotating around the arena will periodically fire spreads of rainbow shots inwards.

The Lantern is in the center of the arena.

Exclusive to Umi, Goddess of Revelry Umi shoots 5 pairs of fireballs per burst and shoots the flame wave rings faster.

A Festival Held in Rememberance

Umi traps players in a ring of bullets as a green flame revolves clockwise around her, leaving behind stationary flame waves which gradually accelerate outwards, along with a second orange flame that orbits at a farther distance, shooting short-ranged rings of flame twirls. A ring of flames around the arena border will also periodically shoot a converging spiral pattern of multicolored flames towards the center of the arena. Umi herself will remain stationary and fire a three-armed counterclockwise spiral of colorful stars.

The Lantern rotates clockwise around Umi.

Exclusive to Umi, Goddess of Revelry Umi’s star spiral is denser, and the rainbow shots from outside the arena are much denser and follow a new, criss-crossing pattern.

Last Word ~ Fireworks on a Starless Night

Umi’s final attack progresses through four stages as it nears completion. In addition to Umi’s usual Danmaku aura, players will additionally be Gold Five Pointed Star Stunned.

  • Gentle: Umi seals off the entire arena with bullets except for a small diamond around her. She then fires a slow clockwise spiral of fire waves as spirits around the arena borders start firing randomized stars towards the center.
  • Moderate: Pairs of explosions start to go off at regular intervals around the border of the diamond, each one telegraphed by a warning sign in advance and releasing a double-layered ring of fire shots. The explosions alternate between going off at the left/right of the diamond and the top/bottom.
  • Intense: The explosions release a third ring of faster rainbow bullets.
  • Climax: The fire rate of all attacks significantly increases.

The lantern rotates counterclockwise around Umi.

Exclusive to Umi, Goddess of Revelry True Last Word ~ The Princess and the Fox

If players make it to the end of the Goddess of Revelry battle, Umi will unleash a second Last Word after the original, following the same progression pattern.

  • Nightfall: Umi surrounds the arena with rings of fire waves and releases three spirits, each corresponding to one of the Moonlight Dancers. Each of them will revolve counterclockwise around the arena while firing rings of stagnating shots belonging to the respective dancer. Umi will follow players, shooting 3-way shotguns of fireballs around her.
  • Twilight: Streams of fireballs begins converging on the center of the arena from outside, forming an oscillating flower pattern.
  • Dusk: The three spirits begin firing additional faster rings of water twirls, petals, and sonic waves respectively.
  • Midnight: The fire rate of all attacks significantly increases.

The Lantern will closely follow Umi and rotate counterclockwise around her.

Battle Dialogue

  • (first Danmaku) “It’s a lovely festival night, won’t you play with me?”
“After watching your performance, I’m brimming with energy!”
Exclusive to Umi, Goddess of Revelry “Tonight has been reminiscent of nights long past.
  • (second Danmaku) “Let your worries fade away under my display of lights.”
“Fireworks always bring joy to my heart, I hope to share that with you!”
“Let the prayers of a prosperous life be released alongside these fireworks!”
Exclusive to Umi, Goddess of Revelry “Fireworks are said to ward off evil spirits…yet we were still struck by tragedy.”
  • (last Danmaku) “I’ve enjoyed our time together, let’s end on a high note.”
Exclusive to Umi, Goddess of Revelry “The art of the danmaku dance must never again be passed to another living soul!”
  • (Last Word) “Enjoy this finale of fireworks that shall bring this festival to a close!”
Exclusive to Umi, Goddess of Revelry “The mistakes of the past must never be repeated.”
  • Exclusive to Umi, Goddess of Revelry (True Last Word) “The night is always darkest before the dawn…”

Defeat and Aftermath

“This fully concludes the Moonlight Festival!”
“I hope all of our guests tonight enjoyed their stay, and we hope to see you again the next festival.”

Once Umi’s Last Word is defeated, all the gathered spirits will converge into a loot bag, and Umi will disappear in a puff of smoke.

After the battle, Umi can be found at the end of a hidden path at the bottom right of the village, asleep next to a tree and three graves that presumably belonged to the three dancers.

Exclusive to Umi, Goddess of Revelry If Umi was defeated as the Goddess of Revelry, her ending dialogue will be different.
“This fully concludes the Moonlight Festival.”
“Your resolve reminds me of my former student…”
“Although I am unwilling to teach you my art, I am grateful for your role as my audience.”
“You may take these as a token of my gratitude!”

Players will then be able to encounter Kanayama, Goddess of the Forge at the shrine Umi used to be at. If approached, Kanayama will greet you and confirm the story of The Night Prince is real. Her room, which is usually behind a locked door, will be open and contain her blacksmithing tools.
“Greetings, adventurer. Fancy seeing you here!”
“Haven’t been giving Umi a hard time have ya? Cus I’d say she definitely needs some tough love. She always slacks off too much.”
“…”
“It seems that your presence tonight has brought back some haunting memories for Umi. She didn’t even come to greet me on my arrival.”
“That book you hold of the Night Prince…”
“As much as I wished the Night Prince was a mere fairy tale, his legacy on history is real.”
“He saw the great destructive potential in the danmaku dance and used Umi for his own gain to teach him its secrets.”
“I uncovered his true motives, but by then it was too late. This village used to be bustlin’ with activity, but it is now lifeless by his hand.”
“He eventually accomplished what he had sought from the power of danmaku, and had the world in the palm of his hands.”
“Although he has since faded from recent memory, the name Carosburg still brings fear to those who remember and lived through his era.”
“Umi’s soul has never truly recovered from what occurred on that fateful day. She casts visions of her former students and relives their performances every night, but is still unable to come to terms with their passing.”
“I’ve recently been visiting in order to seek her help against the newest tyrant. But she always playfully brushes it off.”
“Her experience with the outside world has scared her into believin’ all mortals are evil and greedy beings. But maybe you meeting with her tonight has been able to show her otherwise.”

Drops

The Night Prince Unlocker can only drop if “True Umi” has been activated and Kitsune Umi is defeated as Umi, Goddess of Revelry.
