How & Why to find an Ocean Trench

How

The Ocean Trench is guaranteed to drop from the Hermit God, an event god.

The Ocean Trench Key (The Crawling Depths Key) can also be purchased in the Nexus for 150 Realm Gold.

If you are 6/8, the Hermit God should not be too terribly deadly. If you kill him, he has a chance to drop a Potion of Vitality, a Potion of Dexterity, or a Barnacle Basher. The Hermit God has 55000 HP but only 35 DEF. When you first get to this event, (granted you are the first here), he should be underwater with 8 tentacles circling the deep waters. There will also be 20 hermit minions around the battlefield. The minions do not respawn in this phase, so you might as well take them out now. The hermit minions can inflict Paralyzed Icon Paralyzed, so it is best to get them out of the way before going after the 8 tentacles. After you have cleared out the 8 tentacles, the Hermit God will poke the top of his head out while he spawns 8 destructible whirlpools around him. Once he is done spawning them, he will come all the way out so that you can attack him. This is the best phase to get damage on him.

The Hermit God will now shoot at the nearest player with a massive stream of ink blobs. These blobs will go through multiple players so don’t try to use someone as a body shield. These ink blobs will blind players and deal a decent amount of damage, so try and use any abilities you have on the Hermit God. It is very possible to kill him in just this phase. Once the Hermit God stops shooting ink blobs, he will shoot explosive attacks very rapidly while spawning hermit minions. If he survives this phase, the whirlpools will disappear, and 8 tentacles will spawn, and you will have to fight through the 3 phases all over again. Just clear out the Hermit minions again and attack the tentacles afterwards. Rinse and repeat.

This dungeon is one of several sources of Potions of Mana, which increase your maximum MP amount by 5 per potion. This dungeon also has a chance to drop pieces of UT sets known as the Coral Huntress Set. The set provides decent bonuses, although there is some other UT gear that may be more preferrable.

Layout and Navigation

Layout

There are usually 2 air vents in each room, though one may be covered by an enemy. When entering a room, make sure you have full HP, MP, and air, because you never know how things might go. Always make sure to get rid of bigger monsters first, as Sea Mares and Fishman Warriors can both make all the other monsters seem terrifying. Slowly clear out every room from top to bottom, and remember where your air is. Sometimes if you are fighting a monster, it is best to stand on an air vent and blast away, while stepping off to avoid more damaging shots. If worst comes to worst don’t be afraid to nexus; you can’t try again if you’re dead.

Enemies

WIP

Suffocation

While not really an enemy, it’s still a main mechanic worth talking about. When you first enter the dungeon, please pay close attention to the tealish-blue bar directly beneath your character; upon entering Ocean Trench, you will have a air meter that you will become quite dependent on. The spawning ground is a safe place, but make sure that while you are going through the dungeon that you look for smaller air vents, as they will be your only life line. If you run out of air, you will lose health at a faster rate then standing in lava. Make sure to always keep the air meter at least half way filled, but keep in mind that many things like to confuse or paralyze you in this dungeon, which can make reaching them difficult.

Sea Mares

These beautiful land-horse-looking creatures hit players with Paralyzed Icon Paralyzed shots. While this wouldn’t usually be a problem for a maxed player in any other situation, this is a very perilous ailment to have here. When a Sea Mare paralyzes you, you have a limited time to try to move or kill this creature, as you still lose air while Paralyzed Icon Paralyzed. The Sea Mare is also constantly spawning a genuine school of sea horses. With this amount of attacks from the Sea Horses and the Sea Mare, plus whatever else might be lurking, even a maxed Knight can be taken down quite quickly. Also be warned that dealing with them is not a simple matter, as each Sea Mare has 6000 HP, and 60 DEF, not to mention that the Sea Horses take almost every shot for the Sea Mare - tread carefully.

Fishman Warriors

The Fishman Warriors throw harpoons at nearby players and fire crescents that inflict Swirl Confused for more than 3 seconds. They will also spawn little Fishmen around the room that will also shoot at with confusion boomerangs. However, the little Fishmen do not follow the Warriors, meaning that you can get ambushed by stray groups of the minions when turning a corner. If you struggle to get to an air vent while Confused, remember LDRUDLUR (Left is Down, Right is Up, Down is Left, and Up is Right).

Boss

Thessal the Mermaid Goddess

Thessal the Mermaid Goddess has HP Scaling phases that guarantee a difficult fight. In her first phase, she will begin firing barrages of golden bullets and boomerangs that inflict Gold Four Pointed Star Armor Broken. Note that every bullet in this fight pierces multiplate targets and that Thessal is immune to both Paralyzed and Gold Five Pointed Star Stunned when she is firing the armor-breaking boomerangs. Watch out for her coral bombs, especially when you are Gold Four Pointed Star Armor Broken. Although they do little damage if you have maxed Defense, they inflict Pet Stasis Pet Stasis, which forces even max-Divine players to scramble away to heal up in the vents.

When enough damage is dealt, Thessal will then begin to go invulnerable for 8 seconds and fire a huge circular wave, followed by more barrages of bullets. During this phase, go to the vents and heal up while counting to eight, and then go in for the final blows when the invulnerability period is up. The fight is painstakingly long but easy and WILL kill any Knights who forgot that she is immune to stun most of the time.

Deep Sea Beasts

These giant squids are ONLY in the boss room. They are spawned by Thessal and camp on the only 4 air vents in the boss room. They also have high defense and HP, and can take nice chunk HP away if you have low Defense along with inflicting Red Down Arrow Slowed, making it harder to get back into the boss after healing up. The Beasts’ shots don’t armor pierce, meaning players with maxed defense can easily tank their shots, but the Slowed debuff is still annoying. Knights can stun the squids while Tricksters can decoy them to distract them from the air vents.

Soloing tips

The main thing that causes failed soloing attempts is a person’s hasty decisions and poor planning. Before even starting the boss battle, you should clear all linked rooms and also the rooms linked to those rooms, just for some extra safety. You don’t want to be attacked while you are catching your breath. During the start of the boss battle, go ahead and pour all your firepower you can before she spawns Deep Sea Beasts. Once she spawns them, leave the room and catch your breath. Rinse and repeat. Once your air meter is full, proceed to injure, but DO NOT KILL the Deep Sea Beasts. Do high damage to all 4 Beasts without killing them. This will allow you to run for air if ever necessary without getting killed instantly. Do note that when you kill a Beast, Thessal will spawn another in its place. However, those with low health will not be healed or replaced. Just keep track of which ones you have killed recently, and you should be able to continue the battle without fear. Once you have killed the last of the 4 Beasts, just repeat the process of weakening them again before proceeding with the boss.

Side Note(s)

Randomly, either determined by RNG or if the dungeon has the “Alexander’s Legacy I/II” modifier, Thessal will crumple over the loot bag and portal and ask the adventurers, “Is King Alexander alive?”. If you respond correctly with “He lives and reigns and conquers the world”, she will thank you and spawn Coral Gifts, otherwise she will shout “You speak LIES!” and attack. You should have memorized that phrase already before you start the fight or copy and paste just to be safe. If you have failed to have the phrase typed in time, just know that she will attack again and regain 10,000 HP. Just make sure to type that phrase before moving near whatever loot you have found. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO GET YOUR LOOT UNTIL SHE EITHER EXPLODES OR SPAWNS THE GIFTS. She will explode and kill you instantly if you go in at the wrong time.
