How to find the Snake Pit

Medusa Lizard God Undead Dwarf God Orc King

The Snake Pit is found most often in the godlands because of the Medusas that roam the place.

There are 3 lesser gods that have a chance of dropping a Snake Pit; the Lizard God, the Undead Dwarf God, and the Ogre King. These enemies are all found in the highlands.

Loot and Purpose

The Snake Pit is one of the most reliable sources of Speed, as the boss is guaranteed to drop at least two Potions of Speed. The dungeon also holds the UT Wand of the Bulwark and UT Snake Charmer Pungi, as well as two STs, the Acidic Armor And Pernicios Peridot, and some early game UTs and cosmetics.

Potion of Speed
The boss is guaranteed to drop a Potion of Speed for a minimum of two players. This dungeon is arguably one of the best dungeons to farm speed, especially if you can find one (or multiple) treasure rooms, which are always a source of delight for all players.

Wand of the Bulwark
The Wand of the Bulwark is one of two white bags from the Snake Pit. It is a peculiar wand which shoots in a parametric pattern. The wand drops from the boss, Stheno the Snake Queen, and the treasure room boss, the Snakepit Guard.

Snake Charmer Pungi
The Snake Charmer Pungi is a unique lute which provides +7 SPD on equip and a Green Up Arrow Speedy boost on activation. However, it does not give the Inspired Icon Inspired status effect, but it does retain the active defense bonus from tiered lutes. It drops from the same locations as the Wand of the Bulwark.

Acidic ArmorPernicious Peridot
The Acidic Armor and Pernicious Peridot are two pieces of the Acidified Assassin Set. They drop from Stheno the Snake Queen and the Snakepit Guard respectively.

Snakeskin ShieldSnakeskin Armor
The Snakeskin Shield and Snakeskin Armor are two early-mid game UTs. The shield is similar to a Tier 4 Golden Shield, with 1 less defense but 3 speed on equip. It drops from Stheno and the Snakepit Guard.

The leather armor only provides 11 defense and 3 dexterity on equip, which is similar to a Tier 7 Wyvern Skin Armor. Similar to the shield however, it also provides 3 speed. It drops from Stheno and her pets.

Snake Eye Ring
While the stats of the Snake Eye Ring are laughable as it only provides 3 attack and 3 speed on equip; the 2 second speedy is extremely useful for slow classes and for rushing.

Mini Stheno Skin Mini Flying Stheno Pet SkinWine Cellar Incantation
Stheno also drops a smaller version of herself and her pets as a player skin and pet skin respectively, as well as a Wine Cellar Incantation along with the treasure room boss.

Layout and Navigation Throughout the Dungeon

Snake Pit Example Layout

There are always 5 rooms between Stheno’s room and the starting room. To navigate the dungeon, you have to shoot and break blocks in between rooms.

Two safe ways of clearing rooms include:
- Clearing one row/column of blocks, then circling the edges of the next room and gathering all of the enemies into a cluster in the center in order to easily take care of them
- Clearing out all of the blocks in a hallway before entering a room in order to create more space to escape through or dodge in

Clearing different types of rooms

TBA

Hunting for treasure rooms

Hunt for treasure rooms before engaging Stheno, as this boss is much easier than Stheno even if inexperienced. If you kill these first and you have to nexus at Stheno, you still got something out of the Snake Pit.

There can always be more treasure rooms, so make sure you explore the entire dungeon (but there can also be zero). Do not leave any paths unchecked, because multiple treasure rooms can occasionally be found right next to each other! The most that have been found are five in one snake pit, so you can get quite lucky.

Taking into account the size of one room can help in determining if the next room is a t-room or not and can save you a lot of time. Snake Pit treasure rooms are only entered from the side, so a room leading upwards will not be a t-room. You can also use the size of the dungeon’s layout itself in order to guess if a t-room will have space to spawn or not.

Enemies

Pit Snake Pit Viper
The Pit Snakes and Pit Vipers are the weakest enemies in the snake pit. They only deal 10 and 20 damage respectively and don’t do anything else than wander around. These two will keep respawning out of the grates found in some rooms, so unless you are underpowered then it is best to ignore these after clearing out other enemies.

Fire Python Brown Python Yellow Python
The Fire Python, Brown Python, and Yellow Python are slightly stronger than the lesser pit snakes and vipers. They deal between 30 and 35 damage. The Fire Python is the most aggressive of the three, so be careful. The Brown Python is also aggressive, but less than the Fire Python. The Yellow Python is the most passive python.

Greater Pit Snake Greater Pit Viper
The Greater Pit Snakes and Greater Pit Vipers are the strongest snakes found in the Snake Pit. They are less common than the rest of the snakes, but have much stronger and more varied attacks, such as AoE’s and bombs. They only spawn in circular rooms.

Stheno Pet Stheno Swarm
The Stheno Pet and Stheno Swarm are enemies spawned by the boss of the dungeon. Stheno Pets constantly circle around Stheno, laying down slowing shots. Stheno Swarms spawn outwards of Stheno herself and keeping moving in one direction, shooting towards the player.

Stheno the Snake Queen

Stheno the Snake Queen
Stheno the Snake Queen is the main boss of the dungeon. Found within a large room with four walls, parts of which are breakable, remiaining stationary within the middle of the room. Upon activation, she will begin spawning her three Stheno Pets, which circle around the inside of the room, creating a sort of wall of shots from their trails. Stheno herself will begin cycling between her three attacks, in this order:

  • Throwing pairs of blades in four directions, along with a blade aimed at the nearest player and an aimed AOE grenade.
  • Firing seven sets of grenades in a set pattern around her.
  • Firing a six spiral of purple blinding orbs, along with aiming an AOE blast at the nearest player. The spiral rotates only in one direction.

During her transitions between phases, Stheno will spawn three Stheon Swarms one by one, launching her next attack right as the third one is spawned. Also note that you cacn back out of the middle of the room and hide behind one of the four walls at any time. Additionally, Stheno does not move at all during the phases where she actually shoots.

Her first phase is arguably the trickiest to dodge, as the shots instead are aimed perpendicular to your location, rather than at you. Also, the grenade forces you to keep moving, but moving too fast can cause you to run right into the blades. Rotate slowly with the shots. Enough so that you don’t run into them, but not too much that the grenade will still hit you.

Her second phase is actually the easiest, as Stheno does not shoot at all during this phase. This means that it is actually safe to sit on the boss during this attack, as she does not detonate any AOE attacks on herself. Alternatively, and more suggested, the best way to dodge is to predict where the AOE grenades are going to land. There are clear gaps in between the grenades. You must pay attention to where they are landing and move in between them.

Stheno’s final phase is a simple spiral rotation phase, as she never changes direction. However, it can be difficult to rotate since the spiral shots aren’t very consistent. Also, the Black X Blind effect that the purple orbs give can make it even harder to dodge. In that case, it is best to move out of the middle of the room and hide until the status effect wears off.

Snakepit Guard

Snakepit Guard
The Snakepit Guard is the Treasure Room boss of the Snake Pit. In order to activate the boss, you must first step onto the pressure plate at the top of the room. Once done, the Snakepit Guard will spawn from the vent in the middle of the room. At the same time, arrows that inflict Blood Drop Bleeding will begin firing from the Snakepit Dart Throwers on the sides of the room. The boss itself meanwhile will begin attacking, starting its first phase.

Phase 1

The Snakepit Guard will begin shooting out 3 spreads of Snake Spit and rings of Yellow Swirl Dazed Snake Spinners. It will also begin aiming three-directional Snake balls both dealing damage and causing Daze aimed at the nearest player, and throwing out an AOE grenade that deals heavy damage. It is best to keep your distance and deal damage from afar, although melee classes may have a hard time doing so. A more risky option is to circle the boss and attack while constantly rotating. The Yellow Swirl Dazed status effect can be especially crippling to DPS, so prioritize those. Another thing to watch out for is the AOE grenade, as it deals massive damage.

Phase 2

After taking enough damage, the Snakepit Guard will return to the middle of the room and temporarily go Mithril Shield Invulnerable. It will then return vulnerable and begin moving up and down the length of the room. It will also begin attacking, shooting out Snake Spit perpendicular to its sides and firing Snake Balls in four directions. The boss will also throw out AOE grenades on its path. Finally, the Snakepit Guard will shoot out four rows of fast moving Snake Spinners in front of itself whenever reaching one end of the room. You can attempt to follow the boss as it moves from top to bottom, dealing damage either in front or from behind. You can also try to damage it from behind, but the AOE grenade it throws behind can be quite dangerous. Also, attacking from the front can be risky if one does not have enough SPD, as the wall of Snake Spinners, while not dealing high damage, can be very crippling to your DPS. You can sidestep the Snake Spinners however, as there is space at both ends of the room to move to the side. Ranged classes can even snipe the Snakepit Guard and avoid most of its attacks entirely.

Overview

This dungeon is a great source of Potions of Speed, along with some decent early game UT’s. It also helps prepare players for the rest of the dungeons within the Godlands.
