The Appetizer

The Appetizer

The Appetizer is a special Event Boss who occasionally appears for limited-time events. He must be fought three times in succession, with each fight differing slightly depending on which food piles he has active near him. He is notably one of the few sources of Pet Food.

The Realm Eye says:
Oryx values Bonegrind for both meat preparation and his work to control the chicken population, but the butcher’s broader cooking skills leave much to be desired.
The Appetizer, or so he nicknames himself, is exceptionally skilled in culinary arts. Although the source of his ingredients is often illegitimate, the result is indeed appetizing.
As a personal project, the Appetizer is also determined to prove the quality of his cooking by finding ingredients tasty enough for even Oryx’s pet to consume real food.

Behavior

Pre-Combat

The Appetizer appears during special event periods, during which it will appear in the Mountains after all Red Demons have been defeated. Its appearance is signaled by a global status message broadcasted in the chat:
“Mmm hmm hmm! A feast fit for a beast!”
“I’ll whip up something delicious for the boss with all this!”
“Ah, yummy! Fresh ingredients for my pot!”

He can be found on a small platform resembling a picnic blanket surrounded by grass. During the fight, three similar patches will spawn in the Mountains, each one with a random invincible pile of food on it - either Power Pizza, Chocolate Cream Sandwich Cookies, Grapes of Wrath, Superburgers, or Ambrosia. All food piles have 30,000 (+10% [3,000] per player in Realm) HP, although they don’t attack.

Once approached, he will attack until taking enough damage, upon which he will teleport to one of the three food piles and start a timer. Players have 30 seconds to find him and re-engage him in combat, otherwise the food pile he is standing next to will expire and no longer drop items. The pile he’s standing at is signified by a global taunt:
“I only need 30 seconds to take these toppings!” (Power Pizza)
“Just 30 seconds until I can swipe the stuffing from these treats!” (Chocolate Cream Sandwich Cookies)
“I can pluck these grapes in 30 seconds!” (Grapes of Wrath)
“Oryx will have a hearty meal in 30 seconds!” (Superburgers)
“The nectar of the gods will belong to its rightful owner in 30 seconds!” (Ambrosia)
When the Appetizer is pushed into a new phase, he will go invulnerable and let players destroy the food pile he’s at before teleporting away. If players attack the Appetizer before the time runs out, the pile will drop Food Vouchers and have a small chance to drop its respective Pet Food items.

The Appetizer will teleport to the three food piles in sequence as he loses HP. Depending on which food pile he is currently next to, he will modify his attacks accordingly.

In Battle

Initiation Phase:

The Appetizer fires a 4-armed spiral of shots, each arm consisting of large shots from one food type (excluding Ambrosia). He will periodically throw out a large number of brown and green orbs around him - these will pulse for a few seconds, before turning into exclamation marks and then returning in a large number of AoE blasts shortly after. Once he takes a small amount of damage, he’ll teleport for the first time.

Phase 1:

Taunts: “Get back, naughty meat!”
“Your pets look plenty fed enough already!”

Upon being approached, the Appetizer cycles between three attack stages. Depending on which food pile he is next to, his attacks will vary in power, with his attacks’ damage and potency increasing with the food’s feed power.

  • Runs to the food pile and tosses 12 of the corresponding food in a circle around him (these are harmless for now). He then starts circling along the edge of the circle, shooting a radial burst of boomerang shots whenever he passes over one of the tossed food objects.
  • Stands still while rapidly shooting “beams” of 3 projectiles in random directions.
  • Very briefly wanders around for a bit while passive, allowing players to deal damage to him safely.

Phase 2:

Taunts: “What a pickle I’m in!”
“I didn’t plan on a food fight!”

Upon being approached for the second time, he will cycle through three slightly modified attack patterns:

  • Shoots large shotguns (6 lines, with 3 projectiles per “line”) in a random cardinal direction. Each shotgun consists of 6 “lines” with 3 projectiles per line.
  • Shoots somewhat random, tighter shotguns at the nearest player, predicting their movement.
  • Very briefly wanders in a circular motion while passive, allowing players to do damage to him.

Phase 3:

Taunt: “Greedy gluttons! You’re as spoiled as this food will be!”
“Just let me take the food already!”

Upon being attacked for the final time, the Appetizer cycles between one last trio of attacks at random:

  • Throws out a large amount of the green and brown orbs, identical to those from his initiation phase. These slowly disappear, then eventually return and create AoEs (telegraphed a moment in advance by exclamation marks) on their positions. He will also instantly spawn a ring of food items around him matching the food pile he’s beside, which now shoot a rotating spiral of shots (identical to his “medium” food bullets) before eventually disappearing.
  • Rapidly shoots “beams” of shots in random directions around himself.
  • Very briefly charges towards the nearest player while passive, allowing them to briefly damage him.

Upon his demise, the final food pile will become vulnerable.

Trivia

There exists an unreleased set in the game’s files called the Appetizer Rogue Set. Despite being added alongside the Appetizer himself, no part of this set has ever dropped. This suggests that the set has been scrapped.
