The Beekeeper

The Beekeeper

The Beekeeper is the secret boss of The Nest.

The Realm Eye says:
Dr. Terrible surely hails from a realm far more advanced than ours, yet he seemed quite pleased with himself when he and his lab appeared one day.
The mad doctor is utterly fascinated by everything in this realm, enthralled by even the most basic alchemy despite his own witchcraft being leagues more advanced.
When Oryx approached him with an offer to help with his research in exchange for scientific services, he agreed without hesitation.

Behavior

The Beekeeper is found in a large room resembling the interior of the Mad Lab. The entrance to the room is well hidden, and it can only be found by locating grey tiles behind the walls of The Nest. The walls underneath those tiles are actually destructible and can be broken to allow access to the room.

When the room is located, The Beekeeper will perform a dungeon-wide taunt before attacking:
“Who goes there? Oryx…have you come for me at last?

At the beginning of all of his phases he will have several seconds of invincibility. If all players leave his room for some time, he will taunt “Show yourself you lousy rat!” but will not do anything else to retaliate.

Phase 1

Taunt: “You…you will not stop me again!”
The Beekeeper slowly chases players while spewing a stream of fireballs at the nearest player. He also fires wide spreads of Bees and Demon Fire Blasts in the direction of nearby players which pierce armor while Slowing and Exposing respectively.

He will also limit the movement of players by spawning Beekeeper Flames on various tiles in the room. These flames last for a while and deal 90 armor-piercing damage constantly to players standing on them, while inflicting Armor Break for 4.5 seconds.

Phase 2

Taunt: “Enough! Come forth my insect children, and make them beg for death!
The Beekeeper spawns a number of different-colored Killer Bees around him before firing 4-directional spiraling streams of fireballs. He circles the middle of the room closely during this phase and stops spawning Beekeeper Flames. Killer Bees will continue spawning from the sides of the room during this phase, and each Killer Bee alive will periodically heal the Beekeeper for 200 HP.

Phase 3

Taunt: “I am the creator of a perfect insect race! You WILL kneel before me RIGHT NOW!”
Moving to the back of the room, The Beekeeper Armors himself and begins spawning Beekeeper Flames in huge quantities, spread over wide areas of the room. While this is happening, he sprays streams of fireballs at nearby players, and fires wide spreads of Bees and Demon Fire Shots. He also shoots Lava Bomb Blasts to the sides of him that confuse and have a boomerang effect. Note that the Beekeeper can be Stunned during the period right before this attack.

Phase 4

Taunt: “Augh! No…I cannot…My experiments…”
The Beekeeper retreats to the center of the room and spawns two Experimental Soldier Bees from the sides of the room, which are souped-up versions of the normal Soldier Bees that cannot be harmed. Both bees will be the same color, which is randomized. He will then heal a large amount of HP and taunt:
If Killer Bee Queen is still alive: “I WILL NOT LET YOU DESTROY THE QUEEN!”
If Killer Bee Queen is dead: “YOU WILL PAY FOR DESTROYING THE QUEEN!”
The Beekeeper then circles the room at a moderate pace, shooting a large stream of fireballs at the nearest players. The invincible Experimental Soldier Bees follow him closely while firing radial attacks.

Once he is dead, the Experimental Soldier Bees will explode into dense rings of shots.

Tips and Strategies

For a start, do not try to tank his flamethrower. Ever. This will cause rapid death to even maxed Knights.

Besides his flamethrower, there are two major things to look out for during his battle.

  • The Bee shots that he fires in spreads. These Slow, which can result in a run-in with his flame stream, which will spell instant death.
  • The flames that he spawns on the ground. Not only are they painful to stand on, but they will Armor Break you, making you take significantly higher damage from his fireballs and increasing the chance of instant death.

All of his fireballs fire at different speeds and have different amplitudes/frequency, meaning it is very hard to dodge them. Dodge in wide arcs, so you don’t take any chances of being hit.

In many Nest runs, a common tactic is to attempt to find the Beekeeper before fighting the Killer Bee Queen. Since The Beekeeper is generally considered an easier boss, this will ensure that even if one were to nexus during the battle with the Queen, there is a chance that you will still get something out of it.

Notes

After the Beekeeper is defeated, the computer at the back of the room will say the following:

“Error! Signal to ‘The Beekeeper’ lost!
Log in to ‘The Beekeeper’?

If “Mrunibro” is entered, the computer will say the following:

“Password incorrect! Loading manufacturing info…

Executive producer message: ‘Finally done! 7 Months in production and all of it was amazing! Hopefully, I’ll bee able to do many more projects like this!’”

(The above refers to the development time of The Nest and the size of its XML file.)

If the password is incorrect, the computer will say the following:

“Incorrect… Reminder hint: It’s me.”

If the correct password is still not entered, the computer will say the following:

“Error ! Intruders detected. Shutting down…”

Afterward, no additional dialogue will occur and the computer will be inactivated.

The correct password is “Dr Terrible.” Like other text-based inputs, capitalization and punctuation are disregarded, but the spelling must be completely correct. The computer will say:

“Password Correct… loading Research Logs…”

The computer will then display a random Research Log, out of X possible. The logs are official lore on The Nest and are located in this page (note the dates are in day/month/year):

According to the Hive Research Logs found on the computer, the Beekeeper may be Dr. Terrible after escaping from his lab and finally being able to take control of the killer bees.
