The Source is an object found within The Shatters and an integral part in progressing the “Hard Mode” version of the dungeon.

The Source is found in a hidden room in the Alchemy Lab of the Shatters Royal Castle, hidden behind a poster with its likeness drawn on it. The room will only appear if The Bridge Sentinel was defeated in his Hard Mode battle as Valen the Unbreakable.
When The Source is found, it is passive, cannot move nor attack, and visually cracks as it takes damage until shattering upon death. Destroying it will delay the activation of the Twilight Archmage until four Magi-Generators have been activated instead of three, requiring exploration of all four castle wings. Once the four Generators are active, it will initiate the fight against the Archmage’s Hard Mode version, Nox the Wild Shadow. If the Archmage has been killed without destroying The Source, it will go permanently 
Invulnerable and cannot be killed for the remainder of the run.
On the ground next to The Source is a readable Research Note which reads the following:

If a Void Phantasm is present, the Source will be as well. However, note that the room with The Source will not always be in the Alchemy Lab. Sometimes, it can spawn in an Alchemy Lab marked by a different banner, most likely due to a glitch. Just make sure to check the North part of the room and look for the banner concealing The Source.
