It started out as a way of comparing the age of the moderators, but it kinda got out of hand.
Also, some people may have thought the < was used to say that the things to the right were better, and adding themselves to the end. Nameley the pikachu and the bulbasaur.

As it is now tho, no clue. Pretty sure he just made it a forum game for teh lulz, so there are no actual rules.
