and the first event, from December 2011:
Call for art – alternate character graphics!
I remember this, my memory is of speculation about a player’s sprite changing as it passed each fame hurdle /20, /150, /400, /800, /2000, to be a way to display how “experienced” a character was. in the days when, y’know, the basic game was actually difficult. Unequip your pet for a simulation of this “Elder Realms” Rotmg if you like, sometime.
It would have been an interesting concept.
Example from @Rilr, the knight’s five stages could have been:
There was also talk that the final form could have been a 16x16 monstrosity. shudder
I can’t recall if it was guild chat that led me to think it might be to do with the 5 class quests, or WSforum chat, or just the assumption that 5 images fit the existing 5 class quests.
I seem to recall some negativity about potential confusion not knowing instantly what someone’s character was. If those people only knew the game would now be into the hundreds of skins, their poor heads would have exploded.
Maybe ultimately the devs just found the monetise route for skins a more tempting prospect instead of spending time programming in a system that wouldn’t be any form of revenue stream.
Edit: you can still find people’s work for this on the sprite editor http://www.realmofthemadgod.com/draw.html under the tag: classupdate
