Goblin Slayer is so boring.
28 chapters in and I still donât give a fuck about anything.
Not even gory enough to be fun.
Literally the only things it has going for it are the memes and the fucktarded âcontroversyâ.
I still donât get the appeal of Goblin Slayer- itâs literally just an edgy isekai
Ok, letâs analyze episode 1:
- What we assume to be the main character joins a guild/whatever it is
- She and three other people form a party to attacc some goblins
3)They underestimate the goblins and shit happens, killing 2 and permanently scarring 1 - A random dude by the name of âGoblin Slayerâ comes up and saves the MCâs ass
- GS escorts MC and kills all the goblins, rescuing the last survivor
- GS and MC team up
I see no compelling point here, other than the usage of rape as shock material
My philosophy on these kinds of things has always been:
1)Does it contribute meaningful discourse to the showâs plot?
2) Could there have been another event that could have been a subsitiute? (in this case, was it necessary to use rape?)
I donât have a say in this at all because I havenât seen the anime. Judging by the memes and the couple of manga panels Iâve read, I can say this:
To an extent, yes. The topic of rape and other sexual abuses and whatever the show had was realistic. The goblins would do what would please them best, not just keep the captured MC as ransom. It gives the goblins a ârealisticâ sense. For example, in many instances of history, people were captured as slaves and were used primarily for sex.
Definitely unnecessary, but again, it adds to the sense that it happened because rape shouldnât be a possibility ruled out.
From the manga, it just looks like a wannabe hentai/fanservice dramatic reading. Like, one scene thereâs this badass knight and another scene, thereâs a naked girl on the ground.
Based on what Iâve seen so far, I donât really want to start watching the show. Itâll be tough not connecting with the memes, but I get the picture: rape.
Iâm partially ok with this (as in itâs acceptable), but when you factor in
, it kinda makes you question why. I mean, it could have been mentioned in passing. At least they gave a trigger warning?
Image I found on r/animemes.
People are angry because Crunchyroll didnât mark the show as mature. And they didnât give any warning.
This is literally fucking hilarious, what anime have you watched that literally gave you the warning:
âWarning: Contains scenes may be too graphic to many viewers. Viewer discretion advised.â
Thatâs not an analysis, just a plot recap.
Except for the part where itâs only perpetrated by a race of monsters created by evil gods specifically to be nasty little shits.
I see the arguments âItâs supposed to be dark!â and âItâs supposed to be a more realistic take on fantasy anime!â being constantly raised in defense of GS. Theyâre shallow and indicate a lack of maturity.
I have seen online that the manga is fairly accurate to the original LN and from what Iâve seen the show is very faithful to the manga. Therefore I believe itâs fair to criticize the series based on what Iâve read of the manga, that is to say the 28 chapters I could find online.
In the manga, the hero is shown to still be capable of some humanity and empathy and is willing to help other people. So far we havenât seen his single-mindedness towards goblin extermination generate any conflicts with other characters. In fact itâs quite the opposite.
He just keeps getting more and more people to respect and even admire him. At some point he even manages to raise a small army of adventurers (including other silver-ranked ones) just to defend the village he lives in.
Granted, Guild Girl helped a lot by promising to pay handsomely for each goblin head, but itâs still nowhere near âsuper dark realistic worldâ status. And speaking of Guild Girl, the amount of attractive women who seem enamored with the main character combined with his obliviousness to that fact make this very reminiscent of basic harem animes. The fact that these women include his childhood friend and a generic tsundere doesnât help either.
Thatâs really my main beef with this series: it only has some elements that are somewhat dark and/or realistic while everything else is textbook generic shonen. Thatâs why I dislike the rape scenes and would argue theyâre more exploitative than genuinely making a point and helping build this fictional world, because it honestly looks like theyâre here only to hide how generic and boring everything else is.
As an outsider, I just see it as a normal thing. Of course, since I didnât watch the show or read the manga, I canât make any definitive points about Goblin Slayer. I meme about it, but i donât really care about the rape scene. If the studio/author decided to do it, itâs their choice, not mine. if the author thought it was a good idea, he probably had a reason for it
There are clear and defined exceptions to this, and besides, there are some examples where it is clear the author/studio had some extremely weird non-standard viewpoints. I think you know what my example is.
Thatâs literally a retarded comparison. Arguments like that are never valid.
âWould you jump off a bridge if your best friend told you to?â Fuck no.
âSo would you doâŚbecause your friend told you to?â Itâs like 100x more reasonable than jumping off a bridge.
If thereâs something that I know as a fact (1 is not equal to 2), then I would not believe anyone who tells me that 1=2.
Do I have any experience in writing stories and creating anime? No. Do you? Probably not. Have you ever created any anime before? Probably not.
But people who have created anime or manga before have experience. Without some form of experience, how would they get big?
That being said, 1 = 2 because I have a Ph.D in math.
Just because itâs their job doesnât mean theyâre good at it.
Donât diminish yourself like this. Anyone is capable of critical thinking and can come up with objective arguments.
What makes an opinion valuable isnât necessarily who put it forward, but rather the strength of the arguments that support it.
