Realm of the Mad God Origins

In late 2009 a game development competition called Assemblee began on the TIGSource forums. The competition was broken into two parts:

Many games were made for this competition using these free non-commercial resources. You’ll find some of these still out there today. WildShadow purchased commercial licenses for the works they used and continued working on the game long after the competition was over.

Original credits:

On June 20, 2011 Realm of the Mad God was released on the Chrome Web Store. This was the first time RotMG was made available outside of the official, original website.

On October 31, 2011 the game was released on Kongregate.

A new developer, Willem Rosenthal, was hired sometime in November or December 2011 and was tasked with creating artwork and design.

On February 20, 2012 the game was released on Steam.

Wild Shadow announced on June 18, 2012 that they had been acquired by Kabam. Alex and Rob both departed to explore new challenges while Willem remained with Kabam and continued developing new content until his departure on June 21, 2013.

Lair of Draconis notes:

  • Fighting the dragons in different orders triggers different abilities in subsequent dragons.
  • Depending on how the first 4 dragons are defeated you can unlock a fifth dragon and better loot.
  • Introducing Pet Effects! A new status effect that can turn your pet into a chicken and negate it’s abilities for a certain amount of time.
  • New UT loot for each of the 5 dragons, including new 5 new cloth (cloth by: Wunderwafe).

  • Guest accounts are turned OFF. This change was made to help curb a possible exploit - Guest accounts will not be allowed to login to the game. Guest accounts can be registered via the normal in game steps.
  • We know that some people prefer the anonymity of a Guest account (no chat, no trade spam etc), but unfortunately that system was too open to exploits and griefing.
  • As a registered player there are still options for you to turn off in game chat, turn off trades, turn off chat bubbles, and other ways to customize your experience.
  • Email verification now requires a successful CAPTCHA test to be completed in order to play the game. Currently you’ll only have to do this once to register your account. If you have previously registered you will NOT have to go through any additional verification.

NOTE: We will continue to update and refine the login and registration process for the foreseeable future.

  • Addressed an issue with the Portal not appearing on the beach after defeating the Ghost Ship. It should now appear as it did prior to patch 21.1.
  • Addressed an issue with the Davy Jones keys showing up on the main game HUD after leaving the dungeon.
  • Additional backend maintenance.

EDIT:
- We made a silent push (no server restart) to fix an issue with any emails being returned as “Invalid” during the registration process.

Changes:

  • Added Number Toggle for XP/Fame, HP, and MP bars. This can be changed in Options/Graphics
  • Wand of Egg-cellence is now Untiered and Soulbound. This is similar to all other limited / special weapons.
  • Changed the name of “Hide Player Chat” to “Hide Chat Window”. Also changed the rollover text to better match the functionality of this option.

Bug fixes and improvements:

  • Removed Soulbound from Shoveguy Skin, Slime Ninja Skin, and Scarlett Skin. These were never intended to be Soulbound so we fixed that oversight.
  • Added a menu when right clicking on names in the chat window.
  • Added Chat Options to filter guild, whisper, player chat. The Player Chat option currently governs how Whisper and Guild chat work. In addition, these options will also hide the appropriate in game text bubbles.
  • Added Trade Request toggle to block incoming trade requests.
  • Added “/lock ” and “/unlock ” to the list of commands that can be entered in the chat window.
  • Fixed the /server command to return the proper values. NOTE: this was initially missed in the release note, added in for clarity 5/29/14
  • Fixed a possible exploit with some pet abilities.
  • Fixed several spelling/grammar mistakes in item descriptions.
  • Removed XP from Warrior of Oryx
  • Increased XP on Brute of Oryx

A note from the Realm design team about changes to the Avatar of the Forgotten King:

This event has seen a re-work after some of the valuable feedback from the community. Overall, this fight should feel faster, but also push for a group dynamic. Solo may be possible, but only by skilled players.

  • The Avatar still retains the Quest Tag.
    • We realize this is contentious, but hopefully with the now simpler mechanics, the fight will run smoother.
  • The invulnerability periods have been removed from a large portion of the encounter.
    • When invulnerability is active, Avatar will not attack.
    • In order to terminate the invulnerability, players must survive or destroy key targets.
    • There are 4 phases in total.
  • The Avatar has significantly increased in HP
  • The Avatar is, at most times, armored.
  • There is a new Avatar minion added to the fight.
  • Eyes of the Avatar no longer immediately fire when spawned.
    • They will still fire predictive shots after 2 seconds. Be sure to dodge.
    • Eyes of the Avatar are now actually called “Eye of the Avatar”, not “Killer Pillar”
  • Killer Pillars have new shot patterns.
  • Blobombs now occur less frequently; overall you will be seeing less over the course of the fight.
  • The drop rates have been increased for most items in its drop table.

Update: Bellas Garden Patch Notes!

Hello Realm!

I hope you all have been enjoying the Player Appreciation event so far! There are a few changes to one of the dungeons, Bella’s Garden, which you’ll see with the upcoming patch. Specifically:

  • Damage has been slightly lowered for all of her damaging projectiles
  • Damage has been changed from a flat rate (same damage per shot) to a damage range
  • The projectile range on Flowers has been reduced
  • A short (3 sec) invulnerable period has been added to the Loot Chest
  • The Loot Chest health has been increased
  • Bug Fix: Bella now makes a sound when hit, and when killed
  • Bug Fix: Wand of Budding Romance description now displays
  • Bug Fix: Emaculate changed to the correct version of Immaculate
  • Bug Fix: Feed Power removed from Key

The changes above reflect a rebalancing effort on our end, that we hope will make the dungeon more enjoyable moving forward.

The keys will continue to be available for Bella’s Garden until March 2nd, at which point they will be removed from the shop. The keys will still be functional after they are removed, they will just no longer be purchasable.

We hope that you continue to enjoy the Player Appreciation event as well as Bella’s Garden. Happy hunting, and may the loot Gods give you luck!

Realm of the Mad God Security Updates and Changes (Release 19.2)

Updated Security!

Hello everyone,

We are bringing Realm of the Mad God back up across all servers.

We urge you to please read the following info, since there are some extra steps that registered users will have to take before playing the game. Subsequent logins will behave normally.

All of these extra steps and precautions are required because of the recent security breach. In addition, we urge you to never use the same passwords in two different places (for example: for Realm of the Mad God and for your email account). Please follow basic “strong password” security practices.

These following notes are primarily for users playing from www.realmofthemadgod.com

  1. Upon opening the game, click “PLAY”
  2. You will be asked to login
    • In certain instances you will be required to login again, this is the correct behavior, and will only occur on your first login.
  3. You will be required to update your password.

We have also set new password requirements. They are as follows:

  1. Your new password must be between 10 and 20 characters.
  2. It must contain at least one number.
  3. It cannot contain the same symbol (letter or number) more that twice in a row (no aaa or 222.)
  4. It cannot be your previous password.

The other portals (Steam, Kabam.com, Kongregate, Google Play) have different login methods and authentication, so you can login normally.

NOTE: If your login info isn’t saved, you will have to login using the email attached to your account and the associated password.

  • Added US West 3 server
  • Increased memory capacity on servers to help performance.
  • Added Bella boss fight
  • Added New Items for Bella Battle
  • Added New Skins for Bella Battle

    The bulk of the effort over the last two weeks was spent on a number of fixes that were required, and are not really visible on the surface. We will not be going into detail on any of these changes for obvious reasons.

1/13/14 Hotfix (Release 19.1) is LIVE!

We removed the ability to link accounts between Kongregate / Web and Steam / Web. This was done to prevent issues for players getting accounts hacked / taken over via the linking. We are working on a solution to UNLINK accounts, more info on that tomorrow (1/14/14).

Changes:

  • Linking for RotMG.com accounts to Steam and Kongregate will not be allowed as of this update. Current linked accounts are not changed in any way.
  • Starting Gold for new players is now 40 from 50.
  • Frostbite Sword and Bow of Eternal Frost are now UT and will no longer drop from enemies.

Addressed a number of issues around fame farming, as well as several fixes and adjustments to the Avatar of Forgotten Kings (Shatters event), and a few bugs fixes - the most noteworthy being a fix for anyone having issues with redeeming skins from the Steam event.

Changes:

  • Targets and Dummies no longer contribute to Accuracy bonus
  • Ocean Trench Deep Sea Beast no longer gives XP / Fame
  • Sea Horses no longer give Fame / XP
  • Jackal Warriors, Veterans, and Assassins no longer give Fame / XP
  • Jackal Lords now give increased Fame / XP
  • Avatar: Encounter bullets changed to larger bullets to better represent their collision boxes
  • Avatar: Defeating the Avatar is no longer required to close a Realm
  • Avatar: Resolved some stacked bullet issues in Avatar Encounter (Fireball Phase)
  • The Shatters: Increased Health on loot chests and increased size, lowered Threshold

Bug Fixes:

  • Claiming a Steam skin will now correctly redeem and unlock the skin.
  • “Trade has timed out” message will no longer incorrectly appear if the trade is still active.
  • Multiple loot bags will drop to support more than 8 item drops.
  • Typo in Guild Promotion Text updated to support all promotions correctly.

Try your luck with our newest in game event: The Avatar of the Forgotten King! This ancient monolith pulses with an ancient evil and can open a portal to our most dangerous dungeon- The Shatters! Stay tuned for exciting new holiday releases over the next two weeks!

Changes:

  • The Shatters Encounter has been released! Confront the Avatar of the Forgotten King to drop the Shatters portal!
  • New UT Wizard spell has been added to the game! Shred through waves of foes with the “Tablet of the King’s Avatar!”
  • The Shatters Loot tables have been adjusted. Now the dungeon drops more loot (yay!)
  • The Bridge at first boss in the shatters now takes longer to close (no lollygagging!)
  • The nexus has been updated and switched to the Frost Season Theme.

Bug Fixes:

  • Bug Fix: Guild member online notification now appears correctly.
  • Bug Fix: /server now returns the correct information.
  • Bug Fix: Remapped Nexus escape to R and Center Camera to Z on macs for new players.

  • Hardware Acceleration has been disabled in Mad Lab until a permanent solution can be created for the Tesla Coils
  • Skull-Splitter Sword has been removed from the drop tables
  • Ring Pop has been renamed Candy Ring [NOTE: You may see the Candy Ring display with no name. Do not worry, those items will still function as intended. The name error will be fixed.]

Bug Fixes:

  • Trade requests can no longer be spammed to disconnect users
  • Bug Fix: Fake backpack exploit should no longer be functional
  • Bug Fix: Main menu no longer appears blank after inputting the wrong password

A little more info on Skull-splitters:

Players that have Skull-splitter Swords will notice that it has changed to a UT item from the previous Tier 11. Otherwise this item has not changed - it’s still Soulbound, it’s stats are identical, it’s just that the “Tier” designation has changed. This was to help further differentiate it as a limited / vanity item. We will handle any new vanity items in a similar fashion, although some of that depends on how the item is released initially.

Halloween has come to the Realm! We’ve redecorated the Nexus with a spooky twist to get everyone in the spirit.

Along with this, an all new talking Halloween Pumpkin -and- a NEW WEAPON!

Starting today, players will be able to obtain this epic new sword for a Limited Time Only. Look out for this Tier 11 sword the next time you’re in the Mad Lab, Haunted Cemetery, or Nexus Shop! It is also rumored that Oryx and his fiercest minions drop this frightening new sword as well.

We’ve also fixed a number of bugs to help improve your game play experience:

Bug Fixes:

  • User Sometimes recieves an ActionScript error when selecting a different server. Fixed
  • User cannot shoot if mouse is over chat. Fixed
  • Wine Cellar opened by info is missing from system chat. Fixed
  • Pets conflict with Portals/Loot bags. Fixed
  • More aggressive fix for ‘D’oh, character not dead’ error message.
  • Update build version to 17.3

Introducing the Star Chat Filter! Tired of annoying spam bots? Now you can shut them up with an all new chat filter option. Choose to filter chat from players with up to 1,2,3,4,5 or 10 Stars and up.

This release we have introduced Hardware acceleration to the game! Hardware acceleration will use your computers graphics processor instead of its CPU for many tasks. This will greatly improve performance for many users! Known Issues with this release:

  • There are some small graphical issues with hardware acceleration that need to be ironed out.
    • After enabling hardware acceleration, the user will have to refresh before red glow appears correctly

Prepare yourselves. The Battle Arena is here!

Please keep in mind that shortly after the initial release of build 14.0.0 we encountered brief issues with our data and had the option to push an older build. Our devs were since able to resolve the issues affecting this new build and no longer needed to push the former. The servers are slowly updating to the resolved release 14.0.0. in pristine condition!   • Locate the Arena Portal in the northwestern section of the Nexus.
  • Enter the Arena using either Fame or Gold.
  • Begin each wave after a brief five second countdown. As you progress each wave gets harder.
  • Earn Effusions, Health/Magic Potions, and even Stat Pots in the Arena. The further you get the better your prizes.
  • Take on the Bomb Devils… just beware of the pools of lava they leave behind.
  • Don’t spend too much time on one wave, or the Arena will slowly fill up with water, affecting your ability to slay monsters.
  • Earn a spot on the Arena Leaderboard to see who can get the furthest and in the fastest time.
  • Compete in future Arena tournaments and earn EPIC prizes.

Pets Adjustments

  • In our efforts to adjust game balance, the Pet Heal ability was slightly altered.

Fixes to the chat system.

  • Introducing new Anti-Spam Measures
  • Pressing TAB (or /tell hotkey) only works if you don’t hit the Guild chat or don’t cycle past the user who sent you a message.
  • TAB (or /tell hotkey) now cycles through all the different people that PM’d you. If there were 5 people that PM’d the account then the user should hit tab 6 times to get back to the last one.
  • PM chat will now hold the names of users who have sent the you a message as long as you do not change areas. Chat will be cleared upon changing areas (i.e. Nexus to Realm)
  • When using Page UP to review prior chat, new chat will adjust the text box by one line, instead of snapping the user back to the bottom of the text box

The team is aware of and working to resolve the following issues:

  • Duplicate stats appear for players that have changed their name
  • Guest account data conflicts with Arena functionality. To use the Arena to its full potential you must have a registered account.

P.S.: Certain Arena Tournaments will include new types of prizes. Some of these will have rewards up to and including Crowns with the ability to resurrect your character (no zombie resurrection either).

Release 12: Pets Patch

Pets have arrived and are now live on production. Please take a moment to review the notes to review the changes this new feature brings to the game. Please also take a look at the listed bugs, these are issues that we are aware of and will be fixed in a future release. Please add any additional bugs you find below.

Pet Updates

  • Pets will drop in Egg form and can either be found in game as drops from monsters or purchased in the Shop.
    • Pet Eggs will contain the name of the Pet Family and the Rarity
    • Mystery Eggs will hatch a Pet from a random Family.
    • As of right now, higher rarity Eggs can only be looted.
    • Pet Eggs must be opened in the Pet Yard.
    • All old/existing Pets will be grandfathered into the new Pets system.
  • Pets come in different families: Feline, Canine, Farm, Humanoid, etc.
    • Only Pets in the same Family can be Fused together
  • There are 5 Different types of Pet Rarity.
    • Common
    • Uncommon
    • Rare
    • Legendary
    • Divine
  • Pets will have 1-3 Abilities, 1 at the lowest Rarity Level and 3 at the highest
    • Abilities will help the player with Attacking, Healing, Magic Healing etc.
  • The functional uses of Pets and their different Abilities are tailored to different gameplay circumstances.
    • Choosing the Pet to take on an adventure should correspond to the dangers that lie ahead!
  • Pets will exist across all of your characters; all of your characters will have access to the same Pet Yard
  • Each player will have a personal Pet Yard accessible through the Vault. From the Pet Yard players will be able to do the following:
    • Use an Egg (either purchased or looted) to create a new Pet
    • Upgrade the Pet Yard to hold higher level Pets (via the Caretaker)
    • Select a Pet to follow the player (You can only have one Pet follow you at time. Selecting a new Pet to follow unequips any other Pet.)
    • Feed Items or Food to Pets Items to increase the strength of their Abilities
    • Fuse Pets to upgrade a Pet’s rarity level.

Enhancing Pets

  • “Feed” Items to Pets to raise their Ability Levels
  • “Fuse” two Pets of the same Family and Rarity to increase that Pet’s Rarity.
    • You can only Pets of the same Family and Rarity
  • A Pet’s Ability Level increases after Feeding and Fusing.
    • The only way to get a fully maxed out Pet is to maximize its Abilities at each Rarity level
  • Feeding, Fusing, and Upgrading the Pet Yard can all be achieved by spending either Gold or Fame.
  • Pet abilities are specific to Pets and are not replicable through Items

Fusing and Feeding

  • Interact with the Pet Yard’s Control Console and select Feed Pet
    • Open Feed Screen
    • Place item from your Inventory into the Feed Menu to feed your current Pet.
    • Choose to use Gold or Fame to feed your Pet
    • Pet ability bars visibly increase in the modal
  • Interact with the Pet Yard’s Control Console and select Fuse Pet
    • Open Fuse screen
    • Choose a Pet to fuse with the equipped Pet
    • - OR -
    • Select another Pet to fuse other Pets into.
    • Choose to use either Fame or Gold to Fuse
    • Gain a New Ability or watch your Pet evolve!

The Caretaker and Upgrading The Pet Yard

  • Interact with the Caretaker in the Pet Yard.
    • Select Info
      • The Caretaker will provide you with information about the Pet Yard, Pets, Pet Abilities, Feeding, Fusion, and Evolution
    • Select Upgrade Yard.
      • Pay in either Fame or Gold; the Pet Yard will increase in size and allow you to fuse rarer Pets.
  • The Pet Yard houses all of your Pets.
    • Level up your Pet Yard to support the Fusing of different Pet Rarities.

Other General Updates

  • Change Character NPC replaced with Pet Yard Portal. You can now change your character with the NPC near the northern Nexus corridor.

Our Developers are now pushing a hotfix, that will replace any Lair of Draconis Keys with the newly coined Consolation of Draconis keys. Consolation of Draconis Keys will open a portal to a small room where you can find a random Stat Potion.

We have become, aware of an issue with the latest build. At the moment all servers are down. Unfortunately we do not have an estimate as to when the servers will be brought back up.

Release 11: Are you ready to rock?

The Realm of the Mad God team is proud to introduce the launch of the new Rock Dragon boss encounter. Just in time for Chinese New Year and the Year of the Snake, this new encounter is sure to challenge even the worthiest adventurers.

Hibernating for a millennia deep beneath the surface of the Realm, legends tell that the beast would awaken at the dawning of the new age. Those adventurers brave enough to have the rare opportunity of encountering this monstrosity had better have their wits about them. To defeat the beast, adventurers are going to have to ensure its complete obliteration; just going for the throat on this one might prove… futile.

[Mike’s mundane additions: we’ll be pushing a new release to production shortly. Other than the truly awesome Rock Dragon, this consists of infrastructural changes internal to the client and server. Even more good stuff coming soon.]


Release 10: Let’s try this again

Tonight we’ve taken the unusual step of doing a new release just three days after our previous one. This is unusual for something that’s not just a hotfix, but we felt (and I’m sure most of you will agree) that this was needed.

What’s new in Release 10:

  • Potions have returned to the godlands! They now drop from all the monsters that used to drop them.
  • Drop rates of potions within dungeons have been increased. In particular we have made defense potions a little easier to get.
  • Dungeon drop rates in the godlands have been reduced somewhat, but not to their former levels.
  • Drop rates of loot items in dungeons (especially rare and UT items) have been significantly increased. (Rare pets in dungeons are still really rare.) Edited to add: UTs are still very, very rare. They’re just not as insanely rare as they were before. And as you know, if they become too easy to get, we’ll dial them back down again.
  • The Nexus Crier is back! Now with new, helpful, and informative things to tell you.
  • Behind-the-scenes work on Fame and some other things we’re working on.

Bug Fixes:

  • The “interact key” will no longer send you someplace you didn’t want to go. There is an edgecase involving the Cloth Bazaar that we’re aware of and are working to fix.
  • Clicking “Play” no longer defaults chosen character to a Wizard on the Loading screen / Skin selection modal
  • Tab feature now functions correctly in the registration modal
  • New characters no longer have a Health Potion occupying an inventory slot
  • Character names are no longer cut off in the list of nearby players
  • Ninja class now displays class unlock requirements
  • Package icon display properly in the realms


Release 9: Bazaar Party

  • Cloth Bazaar added to Nexus
    • You’ll find new doors amidst the shop in the Nexus. These doors will take you to the new Bazaar area where a wider variety of cloth and dye are available at all times! Half of the current dyes and cloth are available at the same time and the other half will be rotated in often.

Game Changes

  • Stat potions no longer drop from mobs in Godlands. They will still drop from encounter bosses in the Realm.
    • Clarification: Removed potions from the following monsters: Sprite God, Medusa, White Demon, Ent God, Beholder, Flying Brain, Slime God, Ghost God, the Rock Constructs, Djinn, and Leviathan
  • Drop rates of dungeons in the Realm have been increased
  • Drop rates of Stat potions within dungeons increased across the board

New Content

Known Issues

  • We are aware that players are experiencing difficulties playing on Chrome, and the engineers are looking into it. However, it appears to be a somewhat complicated issue and may take some time to fix.

And lastly, players will be able to redeem Kabam Gift Cards in the game!

  • Character skins can now be worn by existing characters, (not just new ones)! You can change your character’s look by using the armoire in your vault (this will not take your character to Narnia, unfortunately).
  • Winter Nexus is here! (All “Winter is coming” jokes are now obsolete.)

  • Ghostly Prism has been redesigned: more powerful, better tactical uses, less mp
  • The Mad Lab has been overhauled. This includes better drop rate of the dungeon, reduced boss turret’s health, Dr Terrible is no longer healed by his minions, and fewer minions can congregate in a room together.
  • We have updated our payments system, so we’re now integrated with Kabam payments

Other improvements and bug fixes:

  • Teleporting has changed: now you can teleport only to characters, not objects. This should change the behavior of certain teleporting bots in the Nexus, for example.
  • Removed internal error when two players attempt to loot the same item at the same time (note: this will not remove all instances of “phantom item” problems, but should resolve many of them)
  • Steam accounts linked to Kongregate can now get the Ninja
  • We added protective measures against un-pausing when monsters wander on the screen
  • Oryx 2 can now shoot through barrels (he’s been practicing).
  • Fixed some problems with Loot Tier Drop potions
  • Fixed problems with players not being directed back to the game after a purchase
  • Players now see a warning modal if they attempt to chat while muted
  • Enemies in stasis can no longer be healed by other enemies
  • Fixed a problem with Tomb of the Ancients switch

Thanks for all the feedback on Build 119. We are listening.

We did expect this to be a pretty controversial update. I have also pushed an update (119.0.5) that makes the following changes:

  • Potion drop rates in mountains increased by ~33%
  • Cube God and Skull Shrine both give a guaranteed potion (like dungeon bosses)
  • Pentaract potion drop rate increased
  • Minor changes to make Oryx slightly harder

On the subject of Wine Cellar change, we should have been clearer with our intentions here. We would definitely like to support “private runs” of dungeons and even Realms in the future but Incantations where never supposed to be that. They were basically an idea that worked in nearly the opposite way that we intended. This change was to get them back more in line with our original intentions.

I also realize that the changes in this build were targeted at improving the experience of newer players. I promise that the next build will have new end-game content.

Most of the changes are behind the scenes to address lag and other issues. Here are the visible changes:

  • First Oryx encounter updated. Specifically:
    • Oryx has more HP
    • During his “If I see you, I will kill you” phase, Oryx fires at a slightly higher rate.
    • During his initial ring phase, Oryx will repeatedly fire an unavoidable nova effect that inflicts quiet. If you’ve remained in the ring, you will need to fight him without mana. Folks who stay outside the ring will need to contend with minions and deadly satellites that orbit the ring.
  • Necromancer heal now visible
  • “/teleport [name]” command
  • Pirate Cave walls look slightly improved
  • Equipment tooltips now show which classes can use an item
  • Soulbound bags are only visible to person to whom they are bound

  • Damage reduction of armor is capped at a maximum of 75% of incoming damage.
  • Effects of the speed stat were reduced by about a third.
  • Some items (Golden Bow) and monsters (lowlands Skeletons) were tweaked.
  • Medium and more difficult monsters should stay away from spawns.
  • Gods now have the ability to recolonize empty mountaintops.

We are also hard at work on our first big expansion: dungeons!

Yea, sorry for the late post, we pushed build 69 last night which includes the new Paladin class. It should also fix a few outstanding bugs (item duplicating, etc.) and make Oryx a little bit harder for melee classes.

Thanks for the other bug reports. We are working hard to squash them all. We haven’t been able to reproduce the right-clicking bug so if anyone else sees this, let us know.
