The Heart of the Wetlands is the boss of the Sulfurous Wetlands.

The Realm Eye says:
The Heart of the Wetlands once towered over the center of the village now known as the Sulfurous Wetlands. It was an ordinary willow tree with a network of roots that spread to unimaginable lengths. As a result of this, it was a prime convergence point for Lord Ruthven’s corruption spells and now stands as an ominous reminder of what once was.

Behavior

The Heart of the Wetlands is found on a large, circular island surrounded by impassible vegetation save for a single path. When first approached, it will slowly awaken before beginning the fight. The Heart stays stationary for the entire battle, pulsing short-ranged red AoEs that deal significant damage and inflict Quiet. Throughout the fight, four mine-like turrets will rotate around the perimeter of the room, which remain passive until later in the fight.

Phase 1

The Heart of the Wetlands chooses between the following attacks at random, switching attacks on a timer or immediately after taking a large amount of damage. It gains brief invulnerability between attacks.

  • Fires chains of thorn balls in a massive aimed spread, along with smaller spreads of chains behind the direction of its aim. At the same time, it will bombard the perimeter of the arena with rings of green bombs.
  • Releases a storm of parametric thorns around itself while launching large circles of shots which rotate around it after traveling some distance.
  • Fires rapid double-layered rings of spinners along with aimed spreads of converging thorns.
  • Fires rings of thorns alongside periodic bursts of red bombs thrown in a 5-pointed star pattern.
  • Fires a spiral of turning spikes alongside a stream of smaller spikes aimed at the target.
  • After telegraphing their positions with brown spinners, saturates the arena with three concentric rotating rings of thorn balls. It then begins firing massive two-way shotguns of thorn balls, one side being aimed at the target. The perimeter mines will not fire during this phase.
  • After telegraphing their positions with brown spinners, creates four “arms” of thorn balls in a plus shape before rotating them either clockwise or counterclockwise, forcing players to move with them. While this is happening, the Heart fires rings of thorn balls that turn in alternating directions. This can be repeated multiple times in a row.
  • Fires 5-way walls of thorns in two staggered patterns that cover each others’ openings, while periodically throwing out four red bombs in a plus or X shape.
  • Fires chains of spikes in a star pattern alongside rings of slower brown spikes.
  • Fires a 3-armed spiral of bullet “rings” along with 3-way shotguns of spikes.

Below ~75% HP, the perimeter mines begin firing pairs of slow spinners inwards during all of the Heart’s attacks, unless stated otherwise. They will also encircle the arena in a ring of stationary spinners, discouraging escape.

Phase 2

At 30% HP, the Heart of the Wetlands floods the arena with Acidic Swamp Water, transforming it into either a plus or an X shape. It permanently gains the Wooden Shield Armored status for the rest of the fight and begins using the following attacks instead:

  • A clockwise spiral of thorns which drastically slow down after traveling a certain distance, along with a less dense counterclockwise spiral of slow thorn balls. It will also frequently throw out 3 evenly spaced red bombs around itself.
  • Flashes rapidly before firing a massive two-way barrage of thorns that cover 2 segments of the “cross” forming the arena, while also releasing two mines perpendicular to the barrage (thus covering the other two segments) that travel in a straight line while firing rings of stagnating stars. After every time the Heart fires during this attack, it will briefly go invulnerable and rotate the orientation of the attack by 90 degrees. The perimeter mines will not shoot during this attack.
  • Fires rings of slow spinners while sporadically releasing mines that fly in a straight line and shoot additional rings of spinners.
  • Rapidly fires chains of bark projectiles in a star pattern while throwing aimed red bombs at the target.
  • After telegraphing their positions with brown spinners, saturates the arena with three concentric rotating rings of thorn balls while firing 5-way walls of thorns that boomerang after reaching their maximum distance.

Upon defeat, the arena returns to normal and all hazards despawn, leaving behind its loot and Realm Portal.

Tips and Strategies

The vast majority of the Heart’s attacks can be boiled down to either rotating around the boss or standing your ground. Each of the boss’s telegraphed attacks will hinder you from rotating in a full circle, so it is much safer to stick to the same 90 degrees of space (pre-flooded arena).

During the flooded phase of the boss fight, the Heart’s two-way thorn barrage is the worst attack phase to DPS, due to the weakening shots filling the two sides not barraged. It is still much safer to stand on these weakening sides since while inducing a massive DPS loss, they do not kill nearly as often as the barrages.

On extremely rare occasions, the eye of the Heart of the Wetlands will transform into a mouth before exploding into a massive ring of projectiles. This only occurs (though exceptionally rarely) if the Heart finishes a phase while at low health. For all intents and purposes, this is a glorified death animation as the shots do a pitiful amount of damage.
