Treasurer Gemsbok

Treasurer Gemsbok

Treasurer Gemsbok is the boss of the east wing of Oryx’s Sanctuary. Gemsbok specializes in teleportation and other mechanics designed to disorient players.

The Realm Eye says:
Initially a wealthy emperor, Treasurer Gemsbok’s insatiable greed led him to betray his own kingdom to join Oryx’s rule willingly.
Impressed by the cruelty of this self-serving act, Oryx put him in charge of the financial affairs of the newly overtaken realm.
The few surviving kingdoms from the Mad God’s rampage were brought to their knees through Gemsbok’s oppressive taxes, crumbling any remaining economic structure.

Behavior

Like the other minibosses, Treasurer Gemsbok will periodically taunt players each time they sufficiently clear a room in his wing:

Upon entry: “I always knew some unclean wretches would wander from that filthy cellar someday…”
First room cleared: “Ah, so these are the serfs Oryx prattles on about.”
Second room cleared: “Through the tax offices, are they? How I loathe their dirty presence near my vault…”
Third room cleared: “How utterly indignified of them to harass my cabinet like this! Their place will be made clear soon enough, I suppose.”

Treasurer Gemsbok himself is found in an ornate room at the end of the east branch of Oryx’s Sanctuary on the left platform of his room. When first approached, he will laugh and taunt at players.
“An intrusion, all the way down here? Oh, very rich INDEED!”
He will then teleport to the center of the room and laugh and taunt again before starting the fight, closing the room shortly afterwards.

Gemsbok moves by teleporting to 4 designated points on the map around the arena edges. These points are marked by golden pads with gems inset into them. Note that during most phases where he is aiming directly at players, he will destroy decoys sent to distract him.
“Your amateur decoys won’t fool me!”
“Enough of your decoys, I’m the one holding all the chips here!”
“I’ll be repossessing those decoys of yours!”
“You think I’m not wise to such simple decoy trickery?”
“Your decoys have been audited!”

Phase 1

Taunt: “Let’s see how well you can negotiate for your lives!”
Gemsbok rapidly teleports between his designated points as well as the center of the room, firing 4-round bursts of “chains” of purple shots that inflict devastating damage and multiple status effects (each chain consists of a Treasurer Wave, Bolt, Spinner, Trishot, and Shuriken in order, which respectivelySlow/Expose/Confuse/Armor Pierce/Petrify). He will also be throwing out pairs of gems - these explode in AoE blasts that inflict different status effects depending on what color they are (Green for Sicken, Red for Armor Break, Blue for Silenced, and Yellow for Daze). Every time he teleports to a new location, he will fire a ring of armor-piercing Pet Stasis bolts in his wake.

After every six teleports, he will teleport into the center of the room and spawn an invincible coin-like Treasure Artifact that orbits the center of the room closely before throwing an aimed Sick gem at players and teleporting away and resuming his attack (he will not attack directly while throwing out a coin). This coin leaves behind a trail of stationary gem projectiles and fires purple Pet Stasis bolts outwards that boomerang. Up to 3 coins can be active at once. Note that if Gemsbok takes too much damage when throwing out a coin (~5% of his max HP), he will counter by inflicting an unpurifiable Red Down Arrow Slowed to the whole group for roughly 15 seconds.
“You’re pushing your luck, beggars!”
“This brutish battle is beneath me!”
“Know your worth, miscreants!”

On the other hand, if enough damage (~5% of his max HP) is dealt to him during his rapid teleportation, it will briefly stagger him, rendering him immobilized, stunned, and armor broken for several seconds, opening him up for severe damage. Note that there is an upper limit to how much damage can be done in a stagger (~5% of his max HP), and he will prematurely recover if this is reached.
“URK!”
“ACK!”

Note that after a stagger or counter, he will instantly teleport into the middle of the room and throw out a coin.

3 Coin Attack

If 3 coins are active and he remains in the phase until a point when he would normally throw out another one, Gemsbok will instead use a special attack signified by a taunt.
“You’re going home in a peasant’s coffin!”
“The only heads landing will be yours!”
“Your fortune ends here!”

Gemsbok’s coins become passive and rapidly rotate around him as he launches massive aimed barrages of gemstone bombs, with the bombs of each barrage having gradually increasing radii. He will always launch them in a fixed order, signified by which gem he is holding in his hand - (blue bombs first, then green, then yellow). He will then teleport to the top of the room, firing one last barrage of red bombs. After his last barrage, he will teleport into the center of the room and Armor himself before sending his coins to charge at the nearest players. Each coin will fire Cursing purple spinners perpendicular to its path before self-terminating upon hitting a wall. After all three coins are gone, Gemsbok will repeat this cycle again.

Phase 2

Taunts: “Your lives are now forfeit!”
“The realm’s gold stands beneath your feet!”
“Let’s make some CHANGE in the realm!”

At 70% HP, Gemsbok teleports into the middle of the room, instantly summons 3 Treasure Artifacts if they are not already active, and becomes invulnerable, twirling his scepter and pointing it forward as it pulses with golden energy. He will also heal himself to 70% HP to prevent overdamaging and start firing massive, 2-way shotguns of his purple shot “chains” that slowly rotate clockwise, with four chains in each shotgun; he will also be rapidly throwing jewel bombs aimed at players to discourage standing still. These chains are initially aimed at the bottom right and top left quadrants of the room. He cannot be harmed while performing this attack, and players must simply survive.

For the remainder of the fight, the Treasure Artifacts will be orbiting the outer edges of the room, leaving behind trails of Slowing gems while firing boomerang Pet Stasis bolts towards the center of the room.

After he has fired 7 shotguns, Gemsbok will start randomly teleporting to the four outer points of the arena, staying at each one momentarily to use one of four special “colored attacks”. The attack he will use is telegraphed by the color of the gem he will be holding in his hand, along with which of his 4 positions he is in. When launching a colored attack, he will also throw out single gemstone bombs matching the color of the attack he is using (the red and green bombs are currently swapped, it’s unknown if that’s intended).

  • North: Gemsbok will use a green attack, firing a wide shotgun of green shot “chains” that all have a boomerang effect. When he teleports away after using this attack, his ring of bolts will also gain boomerang properties.
  • East: Gemsbok will use a blue attack, firing a massive tripartite shotgun of blue shots. Each “part” of the shotgun consists of three chains of blue bullets that inflict significantly more damage than his regular ones.
  • South: Gemsbok will use a red attack, rapidly firing shotguns of red bolts that pierce armor and Expose.
  • West: Gemsbok will use a yellow attack, firing two fast, overlapping 3-armed spirals of Confusing spinners and Exposing bolts. The spirals rotate in opposite directions.

After using eleven colored attacks, Gemsbok will teleport back into the middle and repeat the cycle (taunt and all). This will continue until he is pushed to his next phase.

Phase 3

Taunt: “Heads I win, tails you lose!”
At 40% HP, Gemsbok turns invulnerable and teleports to the center of the room (he will also heal himself to 40% HP to prevent overdamaging). He will then spawn 3 special passive Treasure Artifacts around him, one of which will be flashing. Gemsbok then quickly shuffles the coins around for a few seconds, before letting them turn vulnerable. If the coin that was flashing at the start is damaged enough, it will rebound and stagger Gemsbok for a significant amount of time, stunning, immobilizing, and armor breaking him. While he’ll recover prematurely upon hitting an upper limit for damage dealt to him in this state (~15% of his max HP), if enough damage is dealt to him in the stagger, the majority of this phase can be skipped.
“Wha-”
“NO!”

(after stagger ends) “YOU’LL PAY FOR THAT CHEAP SHOT!”

However, if players choose the wrong coin (or don’t choose fast enough), Gemsbok will launch a counterattack in retaliation, inflicting all players with Slowed and Quiet for 30 seconds before continuing his attack. The debuffs cannot be purified.
If wrong coin chosen:
“Wrong choice, fraudsters!”
If no coins chosen in time: “Time is money!”

Note that the Treasure Artifacts orbiting the edges of the room will keep firing even while Gemsbok is shuffling the coins.

In this phase, Gemsbok behaves much like he did in his first phase (although he cannot teleport to the center). However, his shotgun is fired at a slower pace but is wider (consisting of six shot chains), his jewel bombs are less frequent but thrown in spreads, and he will also maintain 3 more Treasure Artifacts that follow the same shot pattern as in Phase 1. In addition, he only teleports upon taking sufficient damage (~7.5% of his max HP), warping to a random location each time. Since his teleportation is damage-based, staggering him and dealing damage at the beginning of this phase will decrease the number of times he teleports as well.

Phase 4

Taunt: “Impoverished rats! Laugh all you want, but the rich will always take their place above you!”
At 10% HP, Gemsbok armors himself, teleports into the center of the room and begins firing 2-way shotguns of purple shot chains at players (with three chains in each shotgun), starting with chains aimed at the northeast and southwest quadrants of the room. The direction in which he fires the shotguns will slowly rotate clockwise. He will also be throwing large amounts of jewel bombs in cross-shaped bursts, each burst 45° offset compared to the preceding one. The bursts always have a fixed order of bombs (red innermost, then blue, then green, then yellow) and explode in sequence from innermost to outermost. Every few seconds, he will throw out a Treasure Artifact, which charges players while firing Cursing purple spinners to the sides. However, the Treasure Artifacts orbiting the room’s center will vanish, although the outer ones will still persist. Gemsbok will turn invulnerable at the start of this phase and remain invulnerable until he has fired three shotguns.

Upon death, Gemsbok will explode into a shower of harmless coins and the existing Treasure Artifacts disappear, opening the way to Oryx 3’s chamber.

Tips and Strategies

Don’t try to tank Gemsbok’s shot chains at any point - they inflict extreme damage and multiple status effects, often leading to a quick death if one tanks a whole chain (or worse, a whole shotgun). In addition, keep an eye out for his jewel bombs, as not only can they be sometimes hard to see, they inflict severe AoE damage and dangerous status effects. The green Sick bomb is particularly dangerous, as it’ll leave you unable to recover should Gemsbok hit you with an attack right afterwards.

When Gemsbok is using his 3 coin attack in Phase 1, it’s important to note that he himself will not actually fire any bullets. Provided that one watches out for the jewel bombs and the shots from the Treasure Artifacts, it’s a good opportunity to sit on him and deal heavy damage.

It’s very crucial to get the right coin during his coin shuffle phase. If players fail to do this, not only does it extend the phase by a significant amount, it will also make it far more dangerous due to the sudden and unavoidable debuffs from his counter, which severely cripple mobility and healing power. Less organized groups may not get this right if everyone just fires at the nearest coin (although, to be fair, there’s a 1/3 chance of that actually working), so players should be prepared to dodge for their lives soon after.

In his final phase, avoid tanking the rows of jewel bombs at all costs, as taking an entire row can severely injure or outright instantly kill most characters from the sheer damage and status effects. In addition, avoid sitting on any of the charging Treasure Artifacts - while they will rarely kill instantly, they can crunch through your HP at an alarming rate.

Trivia

Like the other minibosses in Oryx’s Sanctuary, Gemsbok is named after a species of antelope in the Oryx genus. Gemsbok would otherwise be called “Gazella” (from Oryx gazella) but was given the common name instead, probably because of the better thematic fit, with Gemsbok being a treasurer possessing many valuable gems.

Treasurer Gemsbok is an interpretation of one of the Seven Deadly Sins; Greed. This is rather self-explanatory, as he wrung out vast riches from the Realm mostly for his own satisfaction, and even betrayed his kingdom for a chance to get even wealthier, despite him already being an opulent emperor at the time.

Rarely, when Gemsbok counters after a failed coin shuffle, he will use the following sprite instead of his regular “countering” sprite:
Gemsbok Dab
