Nearly a year and a half ago, I finished a dungeon known as the Stone Caves of Nores. It was my second dungeon for RotMG ever made, and received moderately positive reactions. There wasn’t anything particularly special about that dungeon, and it doesn’t even remotely compare to other dungeons on this forum such as the Obsidian Summit, Oryx’s Paracosm, and especially its successor: the Clock Tower.
however, after taking everything I’ve learned from the making of the Clock Tower, as well as community feedback on the Nest and the Lost Halls, I wanted to create a dungeon that could successfully bring these elements together. I wanted to capture what the Nest and the Lost Halls got right without dragging along everything they did so badly. I wanted to make a dungeon that was enjoyable, not hard. While those two aren’t mutually exclusive, the entertainment value of dungeons can easily be overlooked when trying to make something as hard as possible. Admittedly, the Clock Tower had some of this too, and I wanted to try again. Then there was the “group” aspect of the Clock Tower: while almost all of it was still done by me, I had gotten huge amounts of help from other contributors in almost every aspect of the dungeon. This time around, I wanted to do something that reflected my own abilities now, something I really could call my own.
Put all of this together and you have what became the outline of the Stone Caves of Nores 2. There isn’t anything particularly sentimental about the first one that made me choose that dungeon, it was just a theme I wanted to revisit and do properly this time. There have been huge changes, almost to the point where the two dungeons no longer resemble each other in any way. If you’re one of those who have seen the original, I strongly suggest that you still read this one as well. The differences between the two are like those between a middle schooler’s art project and a painter’s masterpiece. And as great as the Clock Tower is, I think this is an even better project. I hope you enjoy.
Here it is: The Stone Caves of Nores 2.
