Safeguarding Against Lag (Rev. 7)

(See I’m lagging! What should I do?.)

Measures can be taken to improve gameplay and help prevent an untimely death of a character:

  1. Play on your fastest available network interface (such as Ethernet instead of wireless).

  2. Close other processes (Internet, Skype) using your network.

  3. Choose an uncrowded server close to you.

  4. Ensure that you have the latest version of flash installed.

  5. Flush your DNS. If you are using a Windows computer, hit Windows + R and type CMD in the run box that appears and hit enter. Type ipconfig /flushdns and hit enter. On a Mac, open Terminal and sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder (10.8, 10.7) or sudo dscacheutil -flushcache (10.6). [This may help fix connection problems but probably not actual client–server lag.]

  6. Clear your browser’s cache [doubtful].

  7. Disable PepFlash if you are using Google Chrome.

  8. If you happen to lag, don’t stay near the Black Tiles, as there might be monsters there, and they will fire at you when the game loads, Gods like Djinn and Medusa can kill you before you react

  9. If memory runs low, due to memory leaks in the game, restart by reloading, or closing and re-opening, the browser window.

  10. Resize the window to the size of the game. The following Javascript, installed as bookmarklet, will do this.

    javascript:window.resizeBy(800-window.innerWidth,600-window.innerHeight);
    How to stop Lag

Close of all other programs going on right now because the computer is working hard to manage all of them at the same time especially downloading.

    1. Update your browser. You will get fewer lags and plus you will get new features!
    2. Delete some stuff like images. Your computer is storing many things over the years so you need to free up some space.
    3. Try to get as few people on your network at a time. It could really lag your computer.
    4. Use computers instead of laptops. They just work better.
    5. Clean your computer. Your computer can get dusty over time so it could mess up some components and make the computer go slower.
  11. Upgrade your internet service.
    1. Buy a new computer.
    2. Repair your computer.
    3. Get another browser. Internet explorer is slow and the best is Mozilla Firefox.
    4. Install a flash projector.
    5. Download Realm of the mad god instead of a website.
    6. Try restarting the computer.
    7. Stay on the same computer. Switching computers can make loading game info slower.
    8. Stay on a server that doesn’t have that much people. Avoid USWest.
    9. Change some settings by going on the tool on the right. Put on hardware acceleration and don’t have shadows on.
    10. Store unlimited data. Right click, click settings, and change it to unlimited.
    11. Reduce the quality. Right click, click quality, and change it to low. If you can’t stand it, change it to medium.
    12. Try reloading, or closing and re-opening, the browser window.
  12. Play on the server closest to you.
