The hellhound will pounce on its victims right before it attacks.
Try to lure them while walking backwards,as engaging them at close range with a character that has mid-tiered equips and not maxed might result into you losing your health at a fast rate.
In case of playing character with low speed (to 25-30) try not to lure them running straight. Try changing direction when hellhound chases you, or simply running by zig-zag. Otherwise you might be shotgunned and it is less nice, when 2-4 or even more beasts chase you after, which can cause insta-death.
