Archdemon Malphas (Rev. 64)

Last updated: Exalt Version 1.2.0.0 (Oct 2020)
Archdemon Malphas

Archdemon Malphas is the boss of the Abyss of Demons.

The Realm Eye says:
Malphas was once a gifted stonemason in the angelic realms beyond the mortal plane.
Banished for imbuing his work with impure charms, he fell from grace and was left tattered in the realm’s volcanic mountains.
Malphas put his talent to use by constructing a den of pyroclastic stone passages in the deepest fissures.

Behavior

Malphas is found in a large square room with a central platform surrounded by a lava moat, with four safe pathways for players to walk on. Upon activation, he will summon several Malphas Protectors that orbit the room, leaving trails of shots while firing single shots inwards and outwards. He goes through 3 phases as he loses HP, alternating between two set attacks at random during each one.

Several White Demons of the Abyss will be present in the boss room when it is first found. Dispatching them before activating Malphas is recommended to make the fight easier.

Phase 1

1A
Malphas moves towards players, firing 3-round spreads of armor piercing bullets at them. He will also be spawning Malphas Missiles, invincible foes that chase players before flashing and exploding into rings of shots.

1B
Malphas fires single purple blasts that vary in speed and deal heavy damage, while firing 3-directional shockwave projectiles that inflict Exposed.

Phase 2

Malphas grows in size, and his Protectors will start firing 3-round spreads instead of single shots. He will rotate around the central platform for this phase.

2A
Malphas fires a slow, three-armed spiral of slow but heavily damaging blasts.

2B
Malphas fires 3-round spreads of “beams” consisting of 3 Exposing wave projectiles each.

Phase 3

Malphas grows in size again and summons a horde of Malphas Hounds to aid him before continuing his attack.

3A
Malphas moves towards players and fires 3-directional shotguns of armor piercing bullets.

3B
Malphas remains still and fires massive two-directional shotguns, along with occasional rings of purple spirals that Armor Break.

Upon Malphas’ defeat, all the lava in the room will vanish, leaving it safe to traverse.

Tips and Strategies

It is recommended to kill all six White Demons before stepping over the checkered black-and-red path and damaging Malphas, since they can cause heavy damage if they join the fight midway through Malphas’ battle. This process is known as “clearing whites”. Although note that in Abysses with a large number of players it is usual for some to go straight in for the boss without clearing any of the white demons. The Demon Blade is a powerful weapon that many strive to possess, and is a quite rare drop from Malphas.

History

The Sword of Illumination was a limited-time drop which sometimes replaces the Demon Blade as a drop. (during June 2015 Month of the Mad God and August 2016 Month of the Mad God). And now only has the chance to drop during Month of the Mad God events.

The Potion of Defense is no longer a guaranteed drop from Malphas as of Patch 27.7.X6 (Oct 2016).
