Staying Alive (Rev. 19)

Beginning Players

If you are brand new to ROTMG, please first check out the Getting Started page.

For beginners, everything in the realm is a threat of some kind. Maybe you just got your first level 20 character but don’t think your gear is that great. You’ve been inside the godlands but keep getting overrun and nexusing. Don’t worry, we’ve all been there. Remember that ROTMG is not an easy game. It will take time and effort to get “good”.
Here are some key points to remember to stay alive longer.

If Something Looks Scary, It Probably Is

Trust yourself. If that Leviathan looks to much of a challenge for you… it probably is. If you don’t feel confident to do a UDL with your friends then just opt out. Nothing is worth you losing your new level 20 charcter because you played too risky.

Get To Know Your Class!

Whichever class you are currently playing as, be it Wizard, Knight, or Priest, know how it works.
Read up on the classes here and try to memorize the abilities of your favorite ones. This can be very helpful in life or death situations. For instance, Necromancer can only heal himself off other enemies. If you step into the lava in a deserted godlands don’t think pressing space will save you.
Additionally, this can be very useful a bit later in your ROTMG career. When maxing stats, don’t forget that Knight needs 40 def and Paladin needs 30 while every other class only needs 25.

Take your time

Most dungeons in the realm should not even be approached without a level 20 character. Especially as a beginning player where most dungeons will be a bit of a surprise to you. Try to level up your character before venturing into the unknown.

Some good ways to level up are:

  • Complete quests
  • Do low tier dungeons such as the forbidden jungle and spider den. These dungeons tend to give a large amount of experience especially when you clear the whole dungeon.
  • Join an Xp or Fame Train. These are simply groups of people running around killing gods or regular monsters. If you see one of these being called in chat just teleport to the group and run around with them. A good Xp/Fame train can max level you in less that half an hour.
Note: EUN2 (Europe North 2) is the fame train server. Find the realm that is full and wait with everybody else for it to open. The train is at it’s best at about 2:00-5:00 p.m. EST and generally isn’t around at night.

Intermediate Players

For an intermediate player RotMG is not a walk in the park. Some dungeons pose very real danger and even gods pose an immediate threat. Many people at this level find themselves dying unnecessarily due to bad play or simply being unlucky. Hopefully this guide will help with that.

Your Life Is The Top Priority

Remember, Realm of the Mad God is a perma-death game. It doesn’t matter if you get a white bag and then die immediately afterwards. Any potential loot is not worth dying for. This also applies to other people: if you and someone else happen to be in dungeon together, don’t be afraid to bail on them. You would rather stay alive.

Exercise Self Control

This is a big one. A lot of unpotted characters and farmers die this way. You should know your characters abilities as well as your own. Can you really do this Abyss with just two other people? Are you good enough to solo this Haunted Cemetery? It may be helpful to make 2 lists for each of your characters: dungeons this character can go into, and ones they can’t (learn more about the dungeons here). Although this isn’t an essential tactic it can prove to be helpful.

Learn Learn Learn!

“Know your enemy.” Those wise words make total sense, especially in Realm. Read up on the gods of the realm and try to memorize their patterns. You will also naturally become better at fighting them with practice.

Adept Players

Okay, you feel pretty darn good. You’ve gotten a 6/8, maybe even 8/8 after a lot of farming. You know your character, probably have over 500 base fame. The question is: what do you do now?

Prepare for a death

I know it sounds bad but accept it, you will die eventually. When you do, it will be nice to have 8 shiny life pots waiting for you to max at least 2 or 3 out of 8. Take a day or two to just farm for def. Once you get 7 or 8, sell for life. Continue this process until you get as much life as you deem necessary. I would recommend at least 8 or so because if you sell each life for even 7 def you will get 56 def, minus 25 to max def assuming you are not a paladin or knight, then you have another 31 to convert to other pots to max. An especially effective way to do this is buying rainbow pots at a 3 rainbow to 1 def ratio. This way you will start maxing everything at the same time and get the most bang for your buck.

Improve your gear

Provided you have a stash of life for when you die, you can start to improve your characters gear. For a Huntress, your top gear is extremely cheap. A T12 bow goes for less than a life and a t6 trap is about a life as well. The hydra is the most expensive piece but won’t take you too long to farm up for. On the other side of the spectrum, buying top items for a Knight is not easy. Acclaims are generally sold for 3 or 4 life, with Acrop, Colossus, and UBHP sold for about the same price, give or take a life. Other tradable swords like Pixie are even more expensive and difficult to get as drops due to rarity. Old tops are more than sufficient since they are usually only slightly worse than their top version, not reflective of the noticeable price difference. Only invest in tops if you have the time and funds to spare.

Something to remember is that tiered rings aren’t always the best route to take. A Paramount or Exalted HP ring is barely different from a far more expensive Unbound ring and usually won’t make a difference in the long run. The Experimental Ring or Ring of the Pyramid are usually better choices if they are available to you. Much of the time, using an unbound ring may not be the best option as the difference between on a much more affordable exalted ring is minimal.

General survival tips for all players

Going afk

Never ever go afk unpaused in this game! Clear the area around you before using /pause command.

Chatting while fighting in godlands is always deadly. Clear the area around you and pause if you want to chat in godlands. Watch out because the gods respawn and after being paused for 5 minutes you can find yourself surrounded by gods (or even gods on top of you). Don’t unpause if you don’t feel safe, just leave realm or wait for someone to clear around you.

Never go afk in the dungeon unpaused, even if you are soloing and cleared everything around you. Enemies can wander and find you if you didn’t clear them all, and in some dungeons they just respawn. Even going afk after entering a Snake Pit solo can be deadly - someone can join you and break the wall, dragging snakes on you.

Though enemies on the beach don’t hurt you much, never leave your character unpaused! Other players can drag deadly enemies there (Kage Kami, Lucky Djinn and Headless Horseman follow you across the realm and can be dragged to the shore to kill other players). And if you won’t be paused when realm closes, you will be teleported to Oryx Castle and minions will find and kill you when everyone rushes ahead leaving them behind.

Entering portals

Be careful entering portals surrounded by enemies. There is a sad and frustrating way to lose your character even without seeing it dying. If you get a delay after entering a portal, you will keep taking damage from monsters around you and they can kill you before you load into the dungeon. You will see ‘Loading error. Character is dead’ message in chat instead of appearing in the dungeon, and then you will see no character on your character selection screen. To prevent this, clear the area before entering a portal, never rush to a portal in lava or in the middle of a godwall, and close the game if you see a long loading screen when entering a dungeon. It’s better to miss a dungeon than lose your character!

Be careful entering portals where enemies can be dragged on the entrance. It includes: Deadwater Docks and Ice Cave (both the entrance to the dungeon and boss room), Abyss (if you get a long loading screen upon entering an Abyss, better close the game), Haunted Cemetery (especially 3rd and 4nd stage), Manor (sometimes lots of Hellhounds can rush towards you really fast, dealing lots of damage), Cdepths (there is a high chance of getting a tiny spawn room with a bunch of Grey Spotted Spiders which can kill you surprisingly quickly).

Risky teleports

  • Always watch out where you teleport to. When teleporting in general, be ready to nexus immediately after teleport.

  • Never teleport to rushers inside the dungeons during the rush unless you can verify that they are safe or you are super confident and can afford to risk your character.

  • When teleporting to godlands pay attention to the class of the person you are teleporting to. Telporting to a melee class is likely to bring you in a situation much closer to enemies than squishier characters are comfortable with. Therefore teleporting to long-ranged and frail characters is favourable.

  • When teleporting to godlands be ready to move/nexus if you land on top of djinn.

  • When teleporting to events, don’t teleport directly on top of them, on the mini-map pick a dot which is a bit further and teleport to them.

  • Watch out when you teleport over the walls on trickster - a Cyclops castle swarmed with gods, a tomb room full of scarabs and jackals, Oryx Castle room with deadly brutes - all these things are nasty and can kill you in seconds.

  • Teleporting to a boss room after people activated the boss can be very deadly, especially in Mad Lab where you can land directly on a green potion or on top of the 2nd boss during its shotgun. In abyss be careful if you teleport to a rusher who just reached the boss - there might be a huge tail of enemies behind them or just White Demons which deal lots of damage combined with other stuff in boss room.

  • Teleporting to a rusher who called ‘TP’ in Cdepths or Ddocks can be deadly if the rusher is still moving. That means that he is still dealing with a bunch of emenies and they can kill quickly if you are not safe.

  • When playing and farming godlands dungeons with friends, you can make someone a godlands anchor and let him be your trusted godlands teleport. This person should always play safe, and it’s better if that person is using a healing class - paladin, necro or priest can heal/buff friends when they teleport to him and allow them to survive even when they teleported in the middle of intense god fight.

  • When playing alone, people usually tend to go to crowded realms to find dungeons faster and to be able to teleport to godlands quickly, but then they increase risk of dying because it’s not safe to teleport to other players. Also when you are weak and people keep teleporting to you, you don’t feel safe because they drag gods on you from other directions and mess up your dodging patterns. There is a simple solution for solo players: make a mule, level up to 20 and equip some godlands gear. Find a Cyclops castle or Ghost King Tower close to godlands and clear all monsters inside and outside. Try to not break the breakable walls while clearing. Log on your mule and teleport to the cleared castle, use /pause command to leave it there in safety. Now you can use this mule as your safe godlands anchor (and you can also store your loot on it). Be careful because sometimes monster spawn near/on top of paused players - then just clear the area on mule after pausing (that’s why you need to level it and to equip some gear).

Drags

Some immature and toxic players try to hoard huge groups of enemies trying to kill you, and some players just like to create huge mobs of enemies to fight with to challenge themselves. In both cases you can die quickly if you are not careful. How to prevent dying from dragging:

  • When teleporting to godlands, never teleport to level 20 melees and priests - even if they are not dragging at the moment, pretty often they are surrounded by huge godwalls.

  • Never chat in godlands unpaused.

  • When entering an Abyss, leave if you see a maxed melee inside already rushing. Most of them are certain that they have a right to drag and kill leechers (and sometimes by leeching they mean that you entered their abyss, i.e. entered a dungeon after them). They might drag on you regardless of your contribution to the dungeon, no matter if you started to rush in other direction or slowly clearing or just sitting on the spawn point, just because they are greedy and want their guaranteed loot. You lose nothing by finding a fresh empty abyss for you because they are super common.

  • When entering a tomb, do a full circle in the boss room and discover it completely before doing something else. Watch out for other people dragging in the boss room! If you want to go afk for a bit, find a safe place to pause, apologize AND warn other people if there are any. If you are are paused in a tomb without any explanation, that might be considered as leeching by other players and they may try to make you nexus or die for that. If you can’t rush, best thing to do is to clear nearby rooms to prevent them dragging on you and to contribute in completing the dungeon.

  • In tombs also be aware of people dragging stuff in sarc rooms during sarc fights and in boss foom during the boss battle.

  • In OT, watch out for people dragging in spawn room while someone else is rushing. People tend to do it when the rusher is close to the boss room to distract your attention from teleporting to the boss room. How to prevent: clear first room or couple while someone else is rushing, stop when you see that the rusher is close to the boss room. Don’t forget to track your air and avoid being paralyzed or confused while you clear.

  • In Ice Cave: watch out for huge hoards of enemies which melees like to drag across the whole dungeon. Never teleport to melees while you clear the dungeon, never chat unpaused in this dungeon and never leech on the snow - your best strategy is to follow groups of people helping them to clear and watch out for others who might (even unintentionally) drag on you.

  • In crowded Shatters: be ready to nexus any moment because people drag enemies very often (mostly by accident or because they are unskilled, but sometimes on purpose).

  • In small Shatters: watch the minimap for the players who separated from the group, be ready to nexus if you see them approaching. Except for being aware of dragging regular minions, watch out for the movements of person who drags blobombs away from the group on 1st boss - they can drag them on the group instead.

  • In Deadwater Docks: be aware of rushers who come back to spawn room, they often drag the whole dungeon trying to kill ‘leechers’ or players who are trying to clear the first room. It’s a jerk move because not everyone can rush this dungeon and usually players who stay in spawn room are the ones who helped the rusher to break the wall. Don’t hesitate when you are entering a portal after rusher called - people can accidentally (or not) drag the boss on the portal and it will lead to instakill if you enter at wrong time.

  • In Manor: watch out for people dragging the boss on you during his bat phase. If someone did it and your confuse controls are not perfect, you can either tp to other person or nexus. Don’t stay in the swarm of bats: even if they don’t kill you during the bat phase, Ruthven can spawn on top of you when he transforms back, instakilling you with his shotgun.

  • In WC: be aware of minions which can be dragged on you from the last hallway. Though people rarely do this during the battle, they do it sometimes after the fight when other players grab their loot, donate to opener or just chat. If you are in small WC and already did damage required to qualify, you might consider to clear monsters at the very end of the hallway to make yourself feel safer.

  • While leveling in a fame train: watch out for people who drag massive godwalls on a fame train to make people gain more xp in a short amount of time. They usually warn in chat when they drag gods, but be aware and be ready to dodge/nexus. Try to stay behind other people and in the middle of the crowd - you’ll still get your xp, you don’t need to risk your character by staying too close. Watch out for stacked Medusa grenades, those are especially deadly!

Fake calls

Be aware of all things which other players call in realm. Sadly some people like to call out Lab/Cem/Candyland/Crystal trying to lure other players to death (in lava, in the middle of the godwall or inside a crowd of buffed ent minions).

  • If someone calls out a Candyland, NEVER risk teleporting unless you know the person and you can tell that he is not lying. The most harmless thing out of such call would be discovering yourself on a beach or inside the castle wall. You can try to teleport if realm is on liches already - there is a high chance to find a cgnome while closing liches since they spawn in the same area, and there are no more ents around to kill you. Still be very careful!

  • If someone calls out a rare event dungeon (usually Tomb or Ocean Trench), don’t trust and never teleport there. When those dungeons drop in game, people tend to enter as soon as possible because they don’t want to miss them or because they want less people to join them. Sometimes there are newbies who call out Tombs and OTs when they see it, but generally there are almost no chances to see a legit Tomb/OT call.

  • If someone calls out LOD/Ice Cave/Shatters/Davy’s, most likely it’s a legit call. Scroll the chat to see if the event which usually drops the dungeon just died - if you see a callout from Oryx The Mad God related to the event death, it’s safe to teleport to the caller. Learn different callouts about different event bosses - they will help you to track what’s going on in realm.

  • For some reason, Manor and Woodlands calls are almost always legit. Those dungeons are not very popular and rarely attract people. Cdepths calls are also legit though they are rare. The easiest way to verify these calls is to look at the quests - usually you can see those calls only in fresh realms, so you expect to see either Red demons, Cyclops God or Phoenix Lords (or Oryx callouts about those quest monsters, for example ‘Fools! There is no escape from my # Red Demons!’).

  • If someone calls out a Beach Bum/Beach Zone, most likely it’s a legit call. Scroll the chat to see an empty message from Oryx The Mad God, and if you see one, it’s safe to go there.

  • Sarc clearing in tombs. While competing for loot in a high-level dungeon some toxic people try to kill others by dragging stuff in a sarc room or by calling sarcs/tsarcs in regular rooms with lots of monsters. Usually people who do this are cheating and are not affected by status effects, so they can drag huge mobs of monsters trying to kill you. How to prevent: either wait for someone else to teleport there first and wait a bit to be sure that they can stay there safely, either track the movements of the caller. When the person is standing still, it’s usually safe to tp. When he is constantly moving around, there is a huge risk of teleporting into a bunch of Scarabs or into a Jackal Group. If you know someone trusted to anchor in boss room, type /teleport [trusted person name] and use it instead of nexus if you teleport into a bad spot.

Ent/Avatar/Djinn sitters

Sadly, the Realm community has lots of toxic people who find the joy in making other players suffer. Instead of playing the game they waste their time trying to kill other players by luring them into a deadly place when they don’t expect to find themselves there.

Some people try to kill players by sitting on top of Avatar and on top of Djinns. Usually they use exploits to take no damage from them, but it also can be done by regular players if they time it right. There is a chance of surviving this if you nexus immediately, but a genaral rule is: teleport with caution when Avatar in realm, don’t trust any calls except from friends when Avatar is still alive. Djinn sitters are rare, but be prepared to nexus right after teleport if you see yourself close to or on top of Djinn.

There is a bunch of immature players who use exploits to be able to sit inside a crowd of buffed Ent Ancient minions (stacked on top of each other up to 20) and take no damage from them. They are calling out fake dungeons trying to kill people and sadly succeed a lot in doing that. There is a very small chance of surviving this because stacked Ent minions instakill even maxed 8/8s. It’s a very sad and frustrating way of dying and you have no time to react after teleport.

ALWAYS watch out and verify the call before teleporting:

  • If someone is calling lots of different stuff and is trying to pay attention to their calls (‘OMG!!!/’TP FAST’/54321 countdown/’Going in’/’TPTPTPTPTP’/’Hurry!’), there is a high possibility that their calls are fake and may be deadly.

  • If someone is calling out dungeons but you never see him going inside, he is probably a fake caller and should be avoided. Hover the mouse over the name in chat, press mouse to see interacting menu with Teleport, Lock and other features and if you can see it after each call, that means the person is still in realm.

  • If someone calls out a Crystal: watch the chat for a callout from the crystal itself. Don’t teleport until you see ‘Sweet treasure awaits for powerful adventurers!’ said by a Mysterious Crystal.

  • Ent sitters usually don’t call out common dungeons because they want something rare to lure more people in their deadly trap. So if you see that someone calls out a common dungeon (Snake pit/Abyss/Sprite world/UDL), most likely it’s safe to teleport there, but usually some other people will also teleport and you will get a crowded one. Try to search those dungeons by yourself.

  • If someone calls out a rare godlands dungeon like Cem, Puppet or Lab and you want to join, quickly zoom out the map and try to find a person on the map, also watch the chat for possible deaths. If you see that the caller is most likely in godlands and some people teleported there (and they are still alive), it’s probably safe to teleport too. If the person is a low-level blue star sitting in midlands or if you saw that someone died from Ent in the chat, NEVER teleport to them and type /ignore [caller name].

  • Ice Cave calls are very rare and legit most of the time, but always check caller’s position and chat before teleporting.

  • If you are constanly seeing in the chat that people are dying from Ents, if you see people mentioning Ent sitters in chat in realm or in Nexus - leave this realm as fast as possible and go to a less crowded one. If you are on a server with small amount of realms but lots of people, switch servers and try to find a less crowded one.

  • Generally Ent/Avatar Sitters target the most crowded realms to potentially harm more people. Try to avoid playing in crowded realms.

External sources of risk

  • Try to avoid playing when tired or intoxicated because it slows down reaction times.

  • Avoid playing or be really careful when you experience occasional lag spikes. Monitor the ingame performance stats for unusually high or volatile net jitter and try to identify whether there are any downloads/updates going on in the background.

  • Don’t play with mouse or keyboard powered by batteries as they might suddenly stop working.

  • Close the game if you experience a long rubberbanding in a dangerous spot with lots of enemies around (for example, events or crowded godlands).

  • Close the game window if your game froze.

  • Make sure that there are no popups that could make the game lose focus (messager notifications or popups for available updates or routinely running programs like antivirus checks) while you play.

  • If you choose to continue playing despite occasional lag spikes (potentially caused by a large amount of players at an event/Oryx or a god wall) be aware of the direction in which you are moving. While lagging you will keep walking in the direction of your last movement input so make sure your current trajectory is not towards a dangerous spot. So approach the enemies at an angle that will not make you end up dead if you unwillingly continue walking at that angle for 1-2 seconds during a lag spike.
