Nikao the Azure Dragon

Last updated: Exalt Version 2.3.0.0 (Mar 2022)
Nikao the Azure Dragon

Nikao the Azure Dragon is one of the five bosses of the Lair of Draconis. If Nikao is the fourth dragon fought, his name will change to Nikao the Defiler.

The Realm Eye says:
In an effort to challenge Limon’s authority, Oryx captured an Ice Sprite and fused it with the body of a fabled dragon.
Oryx has personally bred the captive dragon to obey his commands so that he may establish control over the elements.
The sprite trapped inside yearns to reunite with its original body, now an aimless soul without a host.

Behavior

Nikao is initially found dormant and armored in the center of a plain square room, accessed by attacking his statue in the central room of the Lair. After taking a bit of damage, he will awaken and provide a taunt before attacking.

  • (If fought as the first dragon) “Who disturbs my tranquil waters? You shall soon be acquainted with their depths!”
  • (If fought right after Feargus) “The gales of the sea have ceased, but my tides rage stronger than ever!”
  • (If fought right after Pyyr) “The power of Pyyr courses through me!”
  • (If fought right after Limoz) “Limoz was weak to fall to you!”

Phase 1

Upon initiating the fight, Nikao floods the center and edges of the arena with water.

Nikao is stationary, rapidly firing aimed shotguns of blue blasts. He will occasionally fire a burst of blue spirals that converge on the nearest player, alongside an identical burst fired in the opposite direction. He remains Armor Broken during this phase.

Phase 2

Nikao chases players, firing rapid rings of slowing bullets along with spreads of blue blasts.

Phase 3

Nikao moves into the center of the arena, shrinks the water pool into a square, and spawns numerous other water pools around the arena. He will then start warping between the pools, briefly resurfacing at random pools before ducking underwater again after a while. If enough damage is dealt to him, he will immediately switch to a new pool.

Every time he surfaces, Nikao will be Armored for about a second, firing a spiral of slowing bullets along with aimed spreads of blue arrowheads. These will always be shot in an order of 5, 7, and 4 shots.

Phase 4

Nikao reforms his arena, getting rid of all the water pools and transforming the solid ground into a configuration resembling a ring with strips of walkable tiles connecting it to the corners. As a single slowing shot fires down each of the strips, Blue Eggs will spawn in the corners of the room. Each egg will spawn two Azure Soul Shards when destroyed.

In the meantime, Nikao will be invulnerable in the center of the room, firing a rotating barrage of blue blasts along the intermediate directions along with rings of slowing bullets. All Azure Soul Shards must be killed to make him vulnerable.

Phase 5

Nikao chases players, firing rings of slowing bullets and radial bursts of blue blasts. He will occasionally stop chasing and rapidly circle the central pool of water while only shooting his slowing ring alongside converging bursts of slowing arrowheads, before giving chase again shortly after.

Upon reaching critical HP, he will taunt “You know not what you are doing…”, despawn all existing water, and move into the center of the room, transforming into a statue and awarding XP to his killers. Players can then use the statue to teleport back to the main room, where the blue dragon soul will self-terminate and drop Nikao’s loot.

Inherited Abilities

General
  • If a dragon was slain first, the arena will change accordingly:
    • Pyyr: all water will be replaced with orange Scorching Water, which rapidly deals 20 armor piercing damage to players standing in it.
    • Limoz: all water will be replaced with mud, which slows players even more when they walk through it and causes players to sink into it like Quicksand.
    • Feargus: all water will be replaced with slippery ice - when Nikao surfaces from the pools in Phase 3, he will break the ice and turn it into normal water again.
Phase 2
  • If a dragon was slain second, Nikao will additionally fire:
    • Feargus: 2-way shotguns of Pet Stasis bullets
    • Pyyr: shotguns of armor piercing fireballs
    • Limoz: bursts of green spines with extra bursts being fired perpendicular to them
Phase 3
  • If a dragon was slain second, Nikao will additionally fire a 2-armed spiral of pairs of:
    • Feargus: Pet Stasising purple stars
    • Pyyr: armor piercing red orbs
    • Limoz: sickening shots
Phase 4
  • If a dragon was slain second, Nikao will additionally fire:
    • Feargus: arrowhead-shaped walls of purple pet stasis bullets
    • Pyyr: a spiral of armor breaking shots along with giant fireballs along the cardinal/ordinal directions
    • Limoz: spreads of sickening green spines
  • If a dragon was slain third, the Azure Soul Shards will replace their shots with:
    • Feargus: rings of returning purple fireballs
    • Pyyr: spreads of armor piercing fireballs
    • Limoz: sickening bullets
Phase 5
  • If a dragon was slain second, Nikao will additionally fire:
    • Feargus: 2-way shotguns of pet stasis bullets
    • Pyyr: shotguns of armor piercing fireballs
    • Limoz: 4-way bursts of green spines

Tips and Strategies

Nikao’s chase phases can become very tricky should you get slowed multiple times in succession. He won’t try to sit directly on top of you, but instead circles around you at a close range. However, this can make dodging the slowing bullets even more difficult, as their angle changes with every burst.

Try not to rush in during the “whack-a-mole” phase, as Nikao’s shotgun can deal hefty damage up close. Instead, circle together with the slowing shots if you can.

Nikao’s last phase can be intimidating at first, but crossing the bridge between the eggs can be done without damage by starting as soon as the burst of shots covering the next part passes.

History

Prior to Exalt Version 2.3.0.0 (Mar 2022), Nikao’s first phase would fire rings of slowing bullets, with Azure Soul Shards being spawned around the arena. If they were killed, Nikao would no longer fire these bullets, and become Armor Broken. This part of the fight is now immediately; due to a possible oversight, this means Nikao starts off Armor Broken.
