Archbishop Leucoryx

Archbishop Leucoryx (light form) Archbishop Leucoryx (chaos form)

Archbishop Leucoryx is the boss of the south wing of Oryx’s Sanctuary. Leucoryx has two forms and can be empowered by various destructible orbs that spawn periodically during the battle.

The Realm Eye says:
In contrast to his peers, Leucoryx’s title as an archbishop is legitimate. He was indeed a religious leader for his own wicked cult of demonic worship.
In Oryx’s time as a celebrated gladiator, one of his acclaimed feats was to kill that very same demon. Nonetheless, the archbishop’s bloodlust was not shaken.
Leucoryx interpreted this as a divine sign that Oryx is who he is made to follow, and began practicing his same vile sacrifices in the Mad God’s name.

Behavior

Like the other minibosses, Archbishop Leucoryx will periodically taunt players each time they sufficiently clear a room in his wing:

Upon entry: “A sinful aura in my church? Surely this is what I have been tasked to purify!”
First room cleared: “I had hoped the tortured souls would stop easily in the narthex, but I believe the confessional chamber will set them right.”
Second room cleared: “Lord Oryx, hear my prayer! As they work through the nave, lead these mistaken sinners to your light!”
Third room cleared: “I regret that they are marching toward this cathedral. But if this is your will, Oryx, I must trust your guidance…”

Archbishop Leucoryx himself is found at the end of a decorated room at the end of the south branch of Oryx’s Sanctuary. He will initially be passive until he is approached, upon which he will slowly activate and close off his room.
“You have come far to meet in this holy place, yet I sense an unrighteous energy from you…”

Phase 1

Taunt: “The only salvation here is born of blood!”
Archbishop Leucoryx alternates between a series of attacks at random, with 2 seconds of invulnerability whenever he starts an attack:

  • Throws out spreads of yellow AoE bombs in front of him while firing aimed “arrows” of Silencing fire spikes along with spreads of thrown dark orbs, which each explode into six purple shots. Assuming Leucoryx is at the top of the screen, the bombs always land in a pattern resembling a W, while the orbs always land in a formation resembling an upside-down pentagon.
  • Fires incredibly wide, aimed tripartite shotguns of highly damaging, armor-piercing fire waves. The waves will return to him after reaching their maximum ranges.
  • Fires a stream of wavy orange-and-blue arrowheads that sweeps back and forth in front of him.
  • Fires rapid, extremely wide shotguns of Paralyzing fire shurikens. They will alternate between one spread fired directly in front of him, and two offset spreads.
  • Summons “walls” of V-shaped flame bursts that pierce armor and Silence. Each wall will be slightly offset from the previous.

While Leucoryx attacks, the four invincible Archbishop Candles in the room’s corners will fire walls of blue bolts to prevent players from staying in the topmost/bottommost sections of the map, while the ones closer to him periodically fire shotguns of slow green Sick spinners at players.

Orbs of Light will periodically spawn from the six blue Archbishop Banners and wander around them. Occasionally, Leucoryx will call anywhere from 1-3 Orbs towards him, signified by said orbs enlarging and glowing faintly red. If an orb reaches him, he will launch a counter attack, signified by him raising his staff and letting out a flash of light.

Light Orb Counter A

Taunt: “I feel complete in the light of Oryx!”
Leucoryx will Silence all players and call down evenly spaced rows of Holy Rays that sweep down the whole arena (going south) in five consecutive bursts. He will also fire walls of Paralyzing flaming spinners, each of which will have at least one gap to dodge through.

Phase 2

Taunts:
(starting) “The corruption of your minds has misled you. Do not worry, for I shall lay the truth bare!”
(attacking) “Let your transgressions be scorched away in my ceremony!”

At 75% HP, Leucoryx moves into the center of the room. The four Archbishop Candles take position at each of the cardinal directions around him at a medium distance and and start orbiting him counterclockwise, firing rapid-fire shotguns of green arrows outwards and short-ranged shotguns of Paralyzing waves inwards (they will fire one shotgun of inwards waves and then three shotguns of outwards arrows before repeating). He will then start firing a 4-armed spiral of flaming spinners that initially rotates clockwise but periodically changes direction, while also periodically summoning rings of 8 Holy Rays that strike at a medium distance around him. Each time he summons the Holy Beams, the direction of the spiral will change, and this happens every time the spiral has rotated approximately one quarter of the way around Leucoryx. Like before, he will be trying to call Orbs of Light, but they will move at half the speed to compensate for the reduced distance they need to travel. His counter attack is also modified.

Light Orb Counter B

Taunt:“I am WHOLE!”
Leucoryx will Silence all players and call down thicker (two wide) rows of Holy Rays that start from the center of the room and sweep the whole arena to the north and south until they reach the ends. He will also fire a 2-armed spiral of red-and-blue wavy arrowheads.

Phase 3

Taunts:
(starting) “Very well. Some souls require more direct instruction…”
(attacking) “Chaso Xiflis’TOh Lehek Quantinista!”

At 50% HP, Leucoryx slams his staff into the ground and erupts in a burst of chaotic darkness, transforming into his “chaos” form (he also heals himself to exactly 50% HP to prevent overdamaging). He then moves to the side of the room opposite to his initial position and repeats phase 1, but his attacks now have a darkness/chaos aesthetic (with his thrown dark orbs from before now having a light aesthetic) and deal increased damage.

All existing Orbs of Light will vanish and Orbs of Chaos will begin spawning from the banners instead. They have more HP but are functionally identical - upon absorbing an Orb, Leucoryx will launch a counter attack, signified by him raising his cross and releasing pulses of darkness.

Chaos Orb Counter A

Taunt: “The symphony of screaming chaos, it is like a joyous choir to my ears!”
Leucoryx will Silence all players and call down evenly spaced rows of Chaos Rays that sweep up the whole arena (going north, i.e. away from Leucoryx’s position) in seven consecutive bursts. He will also fire walls of Paralyzing purple spinners, each of which will have at least one gap to dodge through. The speed at which the Paralyzing walls and Chaos Rays are summoned is significantly faster than his first counter.

Phase 4

Taunts:
(starting) “From the scripture of Lord Oryx, 1 Ruthven 5:20, “As for those who persist in sin, rebuke them in the presence of all, so that the rest may stand in fear.”“
(attacking) “You dismiss the chance to repent? Nonetheless, I will ensure your souls are redeemed, misguided ones…”

At 25% HP, Leucoryx moves into the center of the room again, repeating phase 2 but with his new chaotic attacks. His spiral attack is also upgraded to a 5-armed spiral rather than 4. He will continue to absorb Orbs of Chaos in this phase to launch counterattacks.

Chaos Orb Counter B

Taunt:“BE REBORN IN THE MAJESTY OF MY GOD!”
Leucoryx will Silence all players and call down thicker (two wide) rows of Chaos Rays that start from the center of the room and sweep the whole arena to the north and south until they reach the ends. He will also fire 2-way streams of purple-and-blue wavy arrowheads that rotate around him. This attack is identical to Phase 2’s counter, but with increased damage.

This phase lasts until Leucoryx’s death. Upon his demise, all hazards in the room deactivate as the door to Oryx 3’s chamber opens.
“Only the sword can save you now…”

Tips and Strategies

Focus the Orbs of Light/Chaos whenever one starts moving towards Leucoryx - his counter attacks are highly devastating and can easily cull entire groups of players. Slowing the Orbs will increase the time they take to get to Leucoryx, giving players more time to kill them.

Leucoryx’s counters during phases 1 and 3 are incredibly devastating and usually causes a larger proportion of players in a group to die or Nexus than even Oryx 3’s Celestial Phase. It is best to “go with the flow” between the sweeping beams and to not attempt to cross them. The gaps in the paralyzing walls have the same pattern each time so they can be predicted. A good strategy is to start to the left of the top right banner and slightly to the right of the “dot” where the ground tiles intersect. A gap in the first wall of paralyzing shots will always be in this position. After a wave of beams strike, you should move slightly away from Leucoryx (i.e. downwards during phase 1 or upwards during phase 3 assuming a 0° camera angle), then move to the left/right to enter the gap in the next wall of paralyzing shots. It is easier to dodge the walls if you start near the top banners, as the gap in each subsequent wave is fairly close to the previous. When the next wave of beams strike, you should move slightly away again, etc. If you decide to use this dodging strategy, it is important to start near Leucoryx, starting too far away may cause you to end up walking into the dangerous Blue Stab pet stasis projectiles on the other side of the room.

Leucoryx’s counters during phases 2 and 4 are much easier to handle. Players should go near the bottom of the room and cross the beams after they fire. There is ample time to cross the beams, and getting hit witha few of Leucoryx’s wavy arrowhead shots isn’t a huge concern.

Moving very close to Leucoryx during Phases 2 and 4, within the circling Archbishop Candles, is the best (only) way of dealing damage to him for melee/katana/dagger classes. Getting hit with the inward-firing paralyzing shots from the candles can be devastating, so it is important to not venture too far out if one decides to enter the circle. Leucoryx’s spiraling shots will change direction whenever he summons the rings of Holy/Chaos Rays.

Unlike Oryx 3 and the other minibosses in Oryx’s Sanctuary, Leucoryx cannot be staggered in any way, due to his Orbs functioning as a pseudo stagger/counter mechanic.

Trivia

  • Like the other minibosses in Oryx’s Sanctuary, Leucoryx is named after a species of antelope in the Oryx genus; in this case, Oryx leucoryx (common name: Arabian oryx or White oryx).
  • Leucoryx’s light and dark forms reference Papa Emeritus IV and Papa Nihil from the band Ghost.
  • Leucoryx’s taunt upon launching an attack in his dark form (“Chaso Xiflis’TOh Lehek Quantinista!”) has a similar structure as other spellcasting taunts from the Twilight Archmage and Xolotl the Lightning God. Leucoryx’s taunt also formerly referenced Menichko, a DECA developer who designed this fight (“Menichko” was previously used instead of “Lehek”).
  • Archbishop Leucoryx is an interpretation of one of the Seven Deadly Sins; Lust. In this case, it mostly refers to bloodlust (as he relished in sacrificing others to his demonic god, and later Oryx).
