Kogbold Expedition Engine

The Kogbold Expedition Engine is an event boss that drops the entrance to the Kogbold Steamworks.

The Realm Eye says:
The Kobolds were an old race which excelled in mining and tinkering. However, they were cursed with very weak bodies and tragically short lifespans.
Faced with the strength of other ancient races, many were killed or brought into servitude. Eventually, this led to the remnants of their race receding deep underground in hiding.
More recently, they have resurfaced as Kogbolds. While they may still appear living creatures on the surface, beneath their artificial skin lies nothing but metal components and gears.

Behavior

The Kogbold Expedition Engine is found in a setpiece resembling a patchwork industrial area with train tracks running through it in a rough grid pattern. It is a long segmented enemy with a head, a main cannon, and 8 body segments that can attack independently, but only the head segment can actually be damaged.

Phase 1

The Expedition Engine moves in a clockwise linear path along the tracks and fires alternating forward spreads of red bullets from its head segment, while its body segments fire shapes of colored shots perpendicular to their movement, with each color following a different movement pattern. Every once in a while, it will briefly go invulnerable and use one of the following attacks before returning to its usual pattern:

  • Coils up near the middle of the arena and emits continuous AoE pulses before the head fires rings of wavy gears and the body segments sequentially fire lines of purple shots outwards.
  • Loosely chases players while firing rings of large stars which each split into three spiraling shots after flying a certain distance.

Phase 2

At 70% HP, the Expedition Engine moves to the middle of the arena and becomes invulnerable as four Kogbold Tinkerers disembark from the train to activate eight turrets around the arena. Once activated, each turret fires solid walls of horizontal flame shots outwards. In the meantime, the Expedition Engine will dispatch all of its small body carriages, stationing four at the top and bottom of the arena; these will travel back and forth, firing spreads of armor piercing bolts outwards and single red bolts in the opposite direction. The Engine itself remains stationary in the middle of the arena, firing a spiral of white blasts to support its turrets and carts.

All 8 of the turrets must be disabled by defeating them in order to progress the phase. Once the turrets are downed, the Expedition Engine starts moving again, resuming its prior attack pattern albeit in the reverse direction. However, during its primary attack, its body segments now fire 2-way aimed arrowheads of purple bullets instead of shapes.

Phase 3

At 40% HP, the Expedition Engine retreats into the middle of the arena again and repeats Phase 2, reactivating the turrets and carriages. The only difference is that its spiral attack is now replaced by arrowheads of purple bullets fired in a star pattern, alongside periodic rings of exploding wrenches.

When the turrets are disabled, the Expedition Engine resumes attacking again, this time moving clockwise again. During its main attack, the body segments can now fire shapes and purple arrowheads simultaneously, and the last segment additionally leaves behind lingering rings of converging purple shots as it moves.

Phase 4

At 15% HP, the Expedition Engine retreats into the middle of the arena one last time and reactivates the turrets and carriages. This time, after telegraphing the dangerous areas with harmless lightning bullets, the Expedition Engine extends 8 “arms” of small bullets outwards, which begin rotating clockwise; each arm has several gaps to dodge through at randomized positions on the arm. When one set disappears, the Expedition Engine will fire another set to replace it. During this entire process, the Expedition Engine will also periodically fire lines of purple shots in a star pattern.

When the turrets are disabled once and for all, the Expedition Engine becomes vulnerable and helpless, slowly attempting to flee. Once it is reduced to 10% HP, it will flash red as all of its segments explode into purple bullets, leaving behind any loot and the portal to the Kogbold Steamworks in the center of the setpiece.
