Behavior

Jack Frost does not spawn on his own and, uniquely for a boss, must be created by players. During event periods where he’s active, there will be a snowy patch in the Mountains marked by a light blue dot. If a player has a Snowman Body, they can consume it to place it in the center of the patch. Once the Body is placed, players can then add more parts to the snowman to complete the snowman.

Once the snowman has a body, a nose, eyes, and a hat, it will transform into Jack Frost, who will become highlighted with a quest marker and broadcast a message to the entire Realm:
“Brrrrr! You’ve given life to a soul that is neither jolly nor happy!”

Which attacks Jack Frost uses, how much damage he does, and how many phases he has are determined by the rarity of the items used to create him. Higher-tier materials will give Jack Frost more dangerous attacks, but will cause him to gain higher loot drop chances as a result. It is currently unknown if Phase 1 and 2 are determined by his build materials, but how many of phases 3-6 he uses are dependent on them, with him using anywhere from none to all of them depending on his build composition.

Using an Aquatic Top Hat, a Sandy Carrot, and Mad God’s Coal will create the most powerful and valuable Jack Frost possible.

Phase 1

Jack Frost uses one of two attacks.

1A

Taunt: “Let it snow!”
Jack Frost throws bursts of eight bombs around himself, throwing four in an X and four in a plus. All eight bombs will land at the same time, but are split in two “parts”, with the first four bombs being thrown earlier, but having a longer throwtime.

1B

Taunt: “Your dreams of a White Oryxmas shall only be nightmares!”
Jack Frost fires pairs of wavy Slowing blue stars and teal ice bursts at the nearest player, while firing two four-shot spreads of snowballs that slowly rotate counterclockwise.

Phase 2

Jack Frost flashes gray for a moment, then uses one of two attacks.

2A

Taunt: “All I want for Oryxmas is your grave!”
Jack Frost alternates between erratically moving and chasing players, firing rapidly alternating 3-way shotguns of Weakening snowflakes.

2B

Taunt: “Prepare to be jingle bell ROCKED!”
Jack Frost chases players with single icicles that inflict Darkness, before briefly stopping in place and releasing 8-way streams of ice arrows.

Phase 3 (Optional)

Taunt: “Heroes, did you know…that you are about to perish!”
Jack Frost fires two oscillating streams of Paralyzing blue icicles, periodically lunging at players. The first stream is always aimed north, while any later streams will pick a random cardinal direction.

Phase 4 (Optional)

Taunt: “My two front teeth are about to sink into your skull!”
Jack Frost runs away from players while firing shotguns of small snowballs, and occasional 2-way bursts and rings of larger, slower snowballs.

Phase 5 (Optional)

Taunt: “It’s the most wonderful time of year for you to die!”
Jack Frost circles the nearest player, then stops in place and fires a massive 4-way shot-machinegun of snowballs, alternating between in a cross shape or a plus shape after each movement.

Phase 6 (Optional)

Taunt: “Your death will come upon a midnight clear!”
Jack Frost releases an oscillating petal-like pattern of blue stars akin to a Djinn, paired with a predictive shotgun of either 3 or 4 Confusing aqua bullets.

Final Phase

Taunt: “THIS WILL BE YOUR LAST ORYXMAS!”
Jack Frost becomes stationary and starts firing a 4-armed spiral of blue orbs that inflict Unstable, alongside blue crescents fired around himthat Slow. He will periodically interrupt the spiral with rapid 4-way shotguns of blue orbs.

Upon death, he will drop his loot and spawn the three pieces (eyes, hat, nose) that were used to create him, which can be attacked and killed for additional loot. The higher-level the materials used to make him, the higher the chances of getting Oryxmas Weapons and more Tokens from the pieces.
“Nooo! I’ll be back again someday!”

Tips and Strategies

For Phase 1A, if the snowballs are thrown far enough, standing as close as possible to Jack allows for you to deal maximum damage while not receiving any yourself. If the first snowballs thrown raise up in the air particularly slowly, back off to prevent being bombarded. Keep a close eye on Jack himself, however, to prevent being instakilled by an unexpected phase transition.

Any and all methods of slowing Jack are extremely helpful in ensuring his deadliness remains limited. Phase 2A is a particularly deadly phase, as Jack’s unpredictable and high-speed movement, paired with the high amount of shots he fires, can lead to an extremely quick death.
Comparatively, phase 2B is much easier to deal with, as standing in any secondary, intercardinal direction (such as north-north-east) will make his icicles miss you completely.

Phase 3 is also quite easy. Resetting your camera angle will allow you to easily relocate yourself just south of Jack, where his first stream of icicles won’t hit you at all, essentially making him a pinata for the phase’s duration. Getting paralyzed right as Jack transition into his next phase can, however, be detrimental; avoid the icicles first and foremost before worrying about getting damage in!

Phase 4 is not particularly deadly, but can be annoying if Jack is chased further into the godlands. Keep an eye out for the slow, larger snowball projectiles, as their massive damage may rack up fast.

Phase 5 is one of Jack’s deadliest and most sudden phases. Keep your distance to see in which direction Jack will fire and move to the according “safe zone” (either cardinally or intercardinally from Jack).

Phase 6 can be treated like a Djinn. However, because of the shots’ low speed, the phase’s lack of invulnerability, and its general rarity usually meaning there is a large group battling Jack, the phase will usually be done before he can attack.

Jack’s final phase is notably tricky. Continuously circling works for the initial tentacles, but one must be wary not to walk through an entire shotgun once Jack switches up his attack. Don’t be afraid to back off when necessary: Jack is completely immobile during this phase, meaning you can take as long as you need.
Of note is that his projectiles in this phase pierce through obstacles, meaning you cannot hide behind any nearby trees or rocks to avoid it.

Trivia

When he was first released in Rifts, the below information was featured in the Rifts Event Notes:

New snowmen enemies are present all over the realm! By defeating them in the mountains, you will have a chance to obtain a brand new item: a Snowman Body. Dungeon bosses will also be able to drop snowman hats, carrots, and coals instead of marks.

Using the snowman body item in the realm will make a body appear on the light blue dot on the map. Then by using one hat, one carrot, and one coal, the embodiment of ice will come to life: Jack Frost!

Jack Frost will have extra phases, change up his attacks, and deal extra damage based on the overall difficulty of where the hat, carrot, and coal have been found. Building a Jack Frost from Pirate Cave, Forbidden Jungle, and Spider Den parts will lead to an easier fight than one from Ocean Trench, Tomb of the Ancient, and Oryx’s Chamber parts.

Upon defeat, Jack Frost will throw the parts out, allowing you to destroy them and obtain the respective marks of the dungeons used to assemble him, as well as a chance for drops from their respective drop table.
