HP Scaling (Rev. 48)

HP Scaling is a property that some monsters possess, which is designed to prevent steamrolling while still allowing for smaller groups to defeat them. If an enemy has HP Scaling, its HP will increase by a percentage of its base health multiplied by the number of players fighting it. HP Scaling will only apply for players per additional players.

Different enemies will activate their scaling at different times in their lifetimes, sometimes upon spawning and sometimes after a delay. Enemies with HP Scaling will perform a player check every 20 seconds, and readjust their scaling if needed.

This is a list of all enemies with HP Scaling. Note that almost all enemies in the Realm scale at +10% Base HP per player in Realm, while almost all dungeon enemies scale with +20% Base HP per player in Dungeon. The exceptions are the Permafrost Lord (20% scaling), Oryx the Mad God 2 (30% scaling), Shaitan the Advisor (30% scaling), and some of the Mad God Mayhem bosses. The linear scaling can be summarized in the following formula:

Scaled HP = b(1 - s + s*p)

where b is the base HP, s is the scaling factor (0.1, 0.2 or 0.3) and p is the number of players in the dungeon/realm.

Some enemies use a modified scaling system known as Adaptive Scaling, which uses a quadratic model rather than a linear model like most scaling. Enemies with this type of scaling will gain comparatively less HP for the first couple of players, but the amount added per player will gradually increase as more players fight said enemy, causing the enemy’s HP to increase at an increasing (quadratic) rate. This means that small groups will not have to contend with scaling as severe as the usual model, but larger groups may have to deal with far higher HP values than linear scaling gave. Currently, the only enemies to use Adaptive Scaling are those in Oryx’s Sanctuary.

The Adaptive HP Scaling formula has currently been determined as:

Scaled HP = b + [0.09b + 0.02b(p-1)] + [0.09b + 0.02b(p-2)] + … + [0.09b+0.02b(p-p)]

which can be simplified to:

Scaled HP = b(0.91 + 0.08p + 0.01p²)

where b is the base HP, and p is the number of players in the dungeon. This indicates that an enemy will start at +11% HP scaling when there are two players, which is significantly lower than the usual 20-30% of base HP. The HP scaling factor will increase by 2% with each player until it reaches a theoretical maximum of +177% base HP for the 85th player. At 85 players, an enemy with adaptive scaling will reach a theoretical maximum HP of 7996% of the base value.
